Queen

Lets discuss what has indeed become my favourite band, and who I believe to be the greatest rock band of all time, with the greatest rock singer of all time as frontman.

Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor are........QUEEN

Queen rocks! And I don't like rock that much, but Queen is the exception.

Blargh, most overrated band ever. Very simplistic one-dimensional music. I used to like 'em... but then I realised that the music had no depth, and if you've heard one song, you've heard 'em all.

How can you say that if you've heard one song you've heard them all?

They played such diverse styles...Elvis-Style Rockabilly (Crazy Little Thing Called Love), Disco-esque Funk (Another One Bites the Dust), Heavier Rock (Stone Cold Crazy), Power ballads (Save Me), Operatic-style rock (Bohemian Rhapsody), gospel flavoured rock (Somebody to Love - inspired by Aretha Franklin) and basically invented the Stadium Anthem (We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions), and even dabbled in almost "adult contemporary pop" (These Are The Days of Our Lives)

If you listen to a wide spectrum of their music, rather than just the few super huge hits that everyone knows, you can see the broad spectrum of styles.

A look back at Queen's show stealing performance at Live Aid

"These Are The Days of Our Lives" Video Mix - Roger Taylor in 2006, 1992 Tribute version by George Michael and Lisa Stansfield, and original video

Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Live Aid)

Save Me (Live)

"Who Wants To Live Forever" Music Video

"No One But You (Only The Good Die Young)", a showcase for Brian and Roger, and a beautiful tribute to Freddie. Queen's last Studio project thus far.

And of course, the essential, "Bohemian Rhapsody", in a Medley with "Radio Ga Ga" at Live Aid

Celine Dion! *Runs*

Highlander introduced me to Queen. I love their music. Even if you don't like everything they do, there is something you'll like.

Funny, one thing that attracked me to Queen was the diversity in songs. You can have different tunes in one song, and they'll still fit together nicely, something other bands don't do as well. Although I do agree some of their songs do sound similar after a while.

But like you said, yeah, to each their own.

*quickly shuffles Celine Dion single out of sight*

Queen rocks. They are fun. You dont have to be a Rembrandt to have some true artistic value. No depth? How close minded. They were innovators after all. Not copy cats. Rock opera metal farce burlesque? Gotta give em some credit. And their songs certainly dont sound all the same. Just because they were responsible for We Will Rock You doesnt mean you have to automatically write them off as untalented frat boy dreck. Sillyness…

Anyway I don’t take them too seriously but I certainly like them a lot. And I will always associate them with growing up. It was part of my background theme song between like 15-21. And probably a lot of other peoples too.

They have a good sense of dynamics in a lot of their music that's often lacking in rock 'n roll. I enjoyed them a lot. They are a bit on my "just heard too many times" list, but I still enjoy their stuff when I hear it on the radio. Under Pressure is one of my favorites.

My twelve-year-old discovered Limewire over the summer and he asked me if I ever heard of this great song "Bicycle Race" by a band named Queen.

Let us not forget "we are the champions", a very uplifting tune.

That video is hilarious!

I love Queen, but greatest rock band of all time? That honor goes to The Beatles for me.
