Interesting Map

Dont tell me what I cannot do

Two men are on a Island, they both see a "monster", one sees a bright light, and the other sees a dark cloud

My name bares no reference to the music artist.

I've seen that in the Shaping of Middle-eath, HoME 4.

Though... haven't quite managed to read the book yet...

It is pretty cool. I think we're supposed to go "hey, it's Earth!" when looking at it, and I definitely did. But I have one problem with it. What exactly is the Encircling Sea in this map? The map implies Arda is a sphere, and the Encircling Sea is... the atmosphere?

It's a 'regular' sea, I think.. it's mentioned in the Silmarillion. Apparently, only the Valar know its length, and it's the place where Ulmo 'lives'.
It seems like the sun and moon passes in it..? I'm not sure, I only noticed it now. I've never put attention to the Encircling Sea.

This is from the late Karen Wynn Fonstad's book "The Atlas of Middle -Earth".
She did an amazing work, making detailed maps not only to every tiny corner of Middle-earth, but to absolutely all events which happened on Arda since the dawn of its existance.
I'm highly recommending to get this book.

Yes... it was a big plateau of ice. It broke up sometime during the 2nd age... probably at the destruction of Beleriand I assume... I cant acually remember. Can someone fill in the gaps?

Huh. SO then why didnt the elves go back and forth. Also if isildurs peeps wanted to go there so abd why didnt they cross over. It just seems a little odd to me that they would ignore that route.

Fingolfin and his people made their way into Middle-earth across the ice of the Helcaraxe at the beginning of the First Age.

Thats the only crossing I know of.

The Ice was very treacherous and near impossible to cross. I think thats the reason anyway...

The "ice-bridge" was broken by the Valar during the Hidding of Valinor to prevent any movement from Middle-Earth to Valinor. The map shows the state at the beginning of First Age.

Even if the Ice Bridge wasn't destroyed during the Hiding of Valinor, it would have been destroyed nevertheless in the destruction of Beleriand where it lay, long before Isildur's time. (Read the Silmarillion if you want to know more about the crossing of the Grinding Ice. )
