Why did Gandalf insist that Frodo should wear arms at the celebration feast at the Field of Cormallen?

I have not read that section in years. I would surmise that it had to do with the "mark of a hero". Sort of like the ceremonial garb and sword worn by the US Marines.

The warriors, men of arms, had great honour in Gondor in these days. I would expect mail and weapon to be most suitable to wear.

You have all made valid points.
I am just a little disappointed that Gandalf did not use this opportunity to say "Farewell to arms" even though he knew battle was far from over neither in the short nor long run.
I guess I expect more from angels than fom men...

Actually I think it would have been more appropriate for Frodo to reject them, after his statements on the way to Mount Doom. It would have been more in character with his later actions in the Shire, too.

Yes but you forget this was BEFORE the burden of the ring left him.

Frodo did try to reject, but as Kirinki54 said, Gandalf insisted.
