Re: Your Favorite Fantasy Series

BTW, I just thought I'd point out;
Brewhaha hasn't read Hobbit, Sil, or LOTR yet (he started the first legend of Sil, hasn't read Hobbit, and got up to about 70 pages before the end of FOTR) so he can't onclude either of them in his favorites
And I can't add Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth (I think that's the first time the full name has been said around here ) to my favorites list because I haven't finished reading it yet.
So the full name would be (of UT)... UTONAME. you to name.

Re: Your Favorite Fantasy Series

(sheepish look) None.
But that's not my fault, not many people will look at books written by younger people. Unless their related to some famous author. And my books are rather like CS Lewis's, fantasy with a parallel, so their harder to find interested publishers for.

Some of my favorites...

LOTR (obviously)
Foundation (and almost anything else by Asimov)

A couple of favorite singles:

Stranger in a Strange Land

Books to read...

I've enjoyed the following:

1. Do I need mention the first author and his books?
2. Feist and his Riftwar novels (though a bit repetitive)
3. Iain M Banks - best sci-fi author I know of, all the books I've read by him are QUALITY.
4. Wurts/Feist - The Kelewan trilogy. Better than Feist himself at times.
5. Lawhead's Arthurian books. At last, someone has included a Welsh slant to the genre (not entirely Welsh, just some involvement). Arthur IS a Welshman. We gave the world the story, and others took it!
6. Donaldson - Not bad. Hard work at times, but worth it in the end.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE (SO MUCH):

1. Belgariad
2. Goodkind
3. McCaffrey

AND OTHER BOOKS I READ:

1. Iain Banks (fiction novels)
2. Camus
3. Kundera
4. Heller (Catch 22 is amazing)
5. Religious books of mostly Christian background.
6. Anyone heard of Alan Alford or Graham Han@#%$? That kind of stuff always gets me going. Ancient mysteries about Human Cultures. Tidy!
7. Welsh/ancient British stuff.
8. Hoeg.

And I'm just about to tackle The Iliad/Odyssey.

What a crazy ezboard this is! I love it!

Re: Books to read...

I have two questions (this is my curiosity acting here):
1) What McCaffrey have you read that you didn't like? (Seriously, just curious. There are some of her books that I don't think I would have even given a chance if I hadn't read her best stuff first.)
2) You mention the Belgariad. You do not, however, mention the Mallorean, which implies that you are also not considering Belgarath and Polgara. Why? Have you just not read them, or did you just not feel like writing out more than just one name? (Laziness I can appreciate.)

Thank you all!

Fat Middle - Look forward to more talk!

SarahStar - Just realised a mistake; I read the MALLOREAN, not the BELGARIAD. Sorry! Read THE GUARDIANS OF THE WEST, but didn't like it much. Too formulaic. I'm giving a dog a bad name...

About McCaffrey, it was when I was younger, so I can't remember what the book was called. Just didn't get into it. Personal taste! Next I'm going to read Tad Williams I think. Bought it a few weeks ago.

Re: Thank you all!

The Mallorean and not the Belgariad?!? I'm confused. Have you or haven't you read the Belgariad? (Btw, the Mallorean gets better, Belgarath is excellent, and Polgara is almost a work of art.)

Try a different McCaffrey book. Or try the same one again. I know how that works---I've done it many, many times myself, unfortunately. Especially if you started with Dragonflight. I didn't really get hooked on Pern until I got to the Harper Hall books. (The style changes. Big time.)

Re: Thank you all!

I started with the Dolphins of Pern (a friend left it in the car accidentally). Went from there to the others and finally stopped being confused by the series.

Another favourite is the Adept series by Katharine Kurtz. I don't like her Deryni series though.

SORRY!

I feel the need to defend myself! I said that I didn't like Goodkind. Well, things have changed. Into the second book, STONE OF TEARS. Getting better and better! I take it all back...patience is a virtue.

Thank you!

Phil!

Re: SORRY!

I'm not a Goodkind fan, and I am just the opposite. I thought the first couple were quite good, but I found that they went downhill from there. Won't spoil it for you by saying why though.

Nice bump Finn.

In no particular order...

The Silmarillion - The Hobbit - LOTR (which can be thought of as a series): J.R.R. Tolkien

The Pendragon Cycle - Stephen R. Lawhead

The Song of Albion - Stephen R. Lawhead

The Mists of Avalon (and 2 prequels) - Marion Zimmer Bradley

the Shannarah books - Terry Brooks

The Magic Kingdom of Landover - Terry Brooks

Those awesome books by Barbara Hambly whose titles escape me at the moment.

I have really enjoyed A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. A very wonderful fantasy series on an epic scale.
