Sorry Stackpole, stick to Battletech...

Arrgh. After my hiatus, I have one message--save yourselves. The X-Wing series was absolutely terrible. I have NO IDEA WHY some people love it so much--it is a HORRIFYING melange of sex, bad writing and ridiculous plots. I'll go watch WWF for that, thank you very much. Why in the world does Lucas authorize these things? New Jedi Order? Whoa. A gigantic planet-ruining ship that's alive. BEEN DONE. I'm sorry, but both these series are absolutely terrible--please, for your sake, do not read either (X-Wing or NJO). </End rant>

Haven't read the X-Wing stuff, but I agree that the NJO can't possibly get much worse than it already has.

Star Wars books aren't really that disappointing: The Timothy Zahn series is spectacular.

Yeah, Zahn is good, but I wouldn't touch the rest of the genre with a ten foot stick.

I liked the Jedi Academy, also. :P

Wouldn't it be cool if they made the Zahn trilogy ep. 7-9?

I loved the academy trilogy too... though jumping to thrawn after ep. 6 might be a bit of a stretch--they'd have to describe the fall of Couruscant (which, I hold, is the worst explanation/plot in the history of serious SW). Then, there is the matter of those who aren't familiar with the EU at all... so, while its a cool idea for well-read SW fans, chances of a thrawn trilogy are nearly nil

(Zahn and Anderson are good writers--check out their books, but eye the rest with great suspicion. There are a few gems, but you need to find 'em).

Agreed. Have you read the Hand of Thrawn duology?

Specter of the Past / Vision of the Future (both by Zahn)

In my opinion they are the best Star Wars books ever written. They seem like cheesy ripoff crap at first when you read the previews, but they're truly a work of the master.

If only I had seen this before reading X-Wing, precious! Coran "juked" his fighter, "snap-rolled" to port, then sent two crimson bolts into the "eyeball", "vaping" it into a ball of blood-red flame. these boos are laughably stupid. stick with Zahn - hes written all the really good ones

re

Don't forget Isard conveniently giving something in the range of 8 MILLION credits to the Rebels. Whoa, first she abandons Couruscant, and then she gives 8 million to the rebels. Forget Mon Mothma, they should have a nice golden statue of her right beside the New Republic Capital.

Let's see, crapy jargon or horrible plot, whichever is worse?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the problem is that all these authors seem to think star wars is a scifi universe, and they try to write it like it is. Icky.

Then again, it's basically fanfic, isn't it? What do you expect?

Hmm...I've always thought of it as a scifi universe. What is it, then?

And I know what you mean about Fanfic: except for the ones by Weis and Hickman, I consider the DragonLance books to be fanfics.

Did you just mention weis and hickman in my prescence?

*/Fights back spasms of violent rage.

As for what star wars is, it's a 'space opera'. Which puts it closer to the realm of fantasy, IMNSHO.

While I think their works are a bit too risque in places, I still like DragonLance. :P Actually, in the last one of their books, there is slight hint at a demi-Christian view (1 purely good Creator deity), though I think this is most likely just stolen from Lord of the Rings.

Space opera? Och, I'm so ignorant.

Wayfarer, you just saved me a whole lot of writing by hitting the nail on the head. I'm in total concurrence with that, and it's why I reject Star Wars publications (other than those about the development of the films, etc.).
