Wasn't she a single mother, and sentenced by the Islamic laws (Shariah) for having had sex out of wedlock? And the proof was she gave birth to her daughter more than 9 months after her divorce.

Nevertheless, the sentence is cruel and inhuman. Unfortunately a lot of women are sentenced to death or severe corporal punishment for similar "offences", according to the shariah laws. It seems that the women are always the responsible part for the sex involved, their male partners are in general not made responsible, even if the woman was raped.

the variety in the laws of the world amazes (and scares) me.

in the UK adultery is nothing (except maybe good grounds for divorce)

in France a man can kill his adultering wife and walk free as it is a "crime of passion"

In Nigeria that poor woman will be killled.............ye gods its a strange world

This is the first thing I thought after hearing that: I wish I could fly over there unnoticed and bring her to the United States.

This world is indeed a cruel place.

I read a magazine article about a girl who had an affair with some political figure in some Middle East country (I can't remember where, exactly), but she hadn't known he was married. Then, his wife found her one day and poured acid on her face. The wife didn't get punished at all because of her husband's status.

Oh, they do. Although I was watching the Discovery channel yesterday and saw a crocodile rip out all the insides of a zebra while it was still alive. That's gotta hurt.

Actually, I think there's a mechanism in the zebra's brain that numbs the pain. Well, there was one for moose.. I dunno for zebra. I'll check. I hate stoning. It wasn't even her fault! The laws over there scare me

FREAK RAIN!!!!!!!! O.o

Queen of prolonged unexplained absences and long, loooong car rides.

Well, hullo everyone. As you can see, I don't hang out here muchly anymore. There's a good reason for this. Y'see, I've been hanging out at a different chatboard called Cardboardia. So far, I've been havin' a blast. Not that I don't love the TLA, but the magic of Entmoot is lost on me. So, as soon as TLA ends, so will my existance here, probably.

Who knows though? I might stay. Highly unlikely however. This is a good bye in advance, then. Unless you want to join me and my group of friends at Cardboardia.

Cheers!

Thats awful. And being stoned to death seems liek an awful way to die too. It reminds me of a short story we read in English class, later made into a movie, "The Lottery", ne1 ever seen it or read it? But really that is awful. You here of so many bad things in the world, I've gotten to wher e I hate watchin the news cause its so depressing!

back on topic, I read about this too. She isnt dead yet. They are letting her live until she is done nursing the baby which the article said would be atleast another two years. I don't remember what magazine - and I'm too lazy to check. But that is what it said I am 100% sure of. It also said that by then hopefully public outcry will get the sentence taken back.

Isn't this the same system of laws that wants women to have their labia majora excised and thier vaginal openings sewn partially shut in order to make sex better for their husbands?

Umm... yeah. real great system of laws you've got there.

No. The sharia laws or the Koran doesn't say anything about female circumcision (or rather: genital mutilation). It is not required by Islam. It is based on ancient traditions and not religion.

This as information, not as defence or approval.
