Saruman the Schizophrenic

Why the heck did Saruman keep talking to Gandalf throughout the movie? Did he suffer from some kind of Gollum-esque thing? I mean, come on, he just sits down, looks at his bestial book of Balrog drawings, and starts talking to Gandalf, who is hundreds of miles away? What is up with that???

Nazgul

Jackson just needed a way to narrate that part of the movie. It's almost word for word from the book....

Gandalf tells the Fellowship about the origin of Mithril in the "A Journey in the Dark" -

"The Dwarves tell no tale; but even as mithril was the foundation of their wealth, so also it was their destruction: they delved too greedily and too deep, and disturbed that from which they fled, Durin's Bane. Of what they brought to light the Orcs have gathered nearly all, and given it in tribute to Sauron, who covets it."

Jackson just took the central part and used it as some forshadowing. If you notice when he flips through the book - it's the same picture that is in LOTR the books when the Fellowship reach the gates of Moria.

I think Jackson also used Saruman to "narrate" many other parts of the movie. Such as when the birds report back from Moria and he says "So you are going....."

Jackson needed some way to explain the movements of the Fellowship between all the action scenes.

And I wouldn't wonder, if Gandalf could had heard him as well...
At least he heard his words, when he was chanting on top of Orthanc.

LOL, yeah that's what I figured. Maybe he's just deeply insecure and needs that feeling of superiority over Gandalf.

Hhhmmm . . . methinks Saruman's craked and gone nuts.
No, actually, I think that it was just a way to explain to viewers some stuff about the Balrog.

Unless he thought he was psychic and was trying to do ESP to mock Gandalf to his "face..."

I think it is to kind of give a sense of why Gandalf doesn't want to go to Moria...I hadn't read the books when I first saw the movies and I found it helpful. Otherwise I would have been totally confused about the Balrog.

Well, I realize that PJ needed a narrator & everything, but that doesn't change the fact that Saruman keeps talking to himself! I kept wanting to yell during the movie, "Gandalf is hundreds of miles away, you dolt!"
