Re: Who the hell is the witch king

The Witch King and the Lord of the Nazgûl are one and the same.

Back in the early Third Age, after Isildur was slain and the Ring was lost, the Northern Kingdom was divided into three smaller realms: Arthedain, Rhudaur and Cardolan. After a while, a new realm emerged far to the north of these lands and near the northern end of the Misty Mountains. This new realm was called Angmar and its evil ruler was known as the Witch King.

The Witch King went on a long campaign of attacking the three realms, but it was not until many years later and after he had laid most of the northern kingdoms to waste that it became known that the Witch King was indeed the chief Ringwraith of Sauron.

And you know what happened to him at the end of the Third Age!

Ben! What's going on over here!?

Nobody's talking except to chastise someone for a minor swearing infraction. Where'd all the Tolkien talk go?

Re: Ben! What's going on over here!?

Don't know, RKittle.

The Witch-King of Angmar was the Lord of the Nazgul(aka the Morgul Lord, the Captain of Despair or the Black Captain). He was the most powerful of the Ringwraiths and Sauron's second. Midway through the Third Age, he was sent to harrass Arnor(into destruction if possible). Founding the witch-realm of Angmar he lead several wars against it which did succed in depopulating the area and splitting Arnor. He later took Minas Ithil by storm and made it into Minas Morgul.

Re: Wheres Angmar then ?

They're realms. Arnor comprised most of the land west of the Misty Mountains, which is Eriador, when it was populated, but in the time that The Lord of the Rings takes place it is a Lost Realm. So too is Angmar, North of Arnor, founded in the Mountains of the same name. They branch off from the Misty Mountains westwards and hang over the North-east of Eriador.
