Well I'm sure it's been discussed, but it's been awhile, and we have a lot of new people, so why not?

I believe that the Entwives ended up near the Shire. In the early part of FotR there is a rumor in a Shire bar that some peculiar trees or something (someone will need to do better than me on remembering the exact wording ), and I think that was the Entwives.

I don't think it was finished...I don't think they perished, either.
I think Merry and Pippin probably help them find the Entwives in an "untold" tale. As bMilder stated, there is a discussion of walking trees in the first chapter of LotR. Sam arguing with the miller and Sandyman in the Green Dragon.

I always got the impression that the Old Forest was the Entwives.

As for the "perishing", I don't believe they ever did! I look out my window right now and see an Ent in my own yard, but he's sleeping.

That's so beautiful! I think I want to cry! I always thought that one of the saddest parts of the book was that such patient thoughtful creatures were doomed to fade away. My sister has my copy of LOTR right now, but as soon as I get a chance to snatch it from her, I'll reread the first couple of chapters and keep my eyes open. Do you think that Peter Jackson might make a reference to that? I hope so.

Treebeard

In te first chapter of FOTR Sam argues with Ted Sandiman about a moving tree his cousin saw while he was hunting. Ted doesn't want to believe that and insults Sam and his cousin.

It might have been an Entwife. I think it's possible. It would be an awfull shame if te ents would dissappear.

Hey Erewe! That Ent out your window is not sleeping, he's just moving so slow that you cannot tell!

True indeed. Sam's cousin's eyewitness evidence says there is a good chance the Entwives were still around. I don't know if they were in the Old Forest but it's possible. How close was the Forest to the area where Sam's cousin saw the walking tree?

OK, on the 2nd or 3rd page of 'The Shadow of the Past" Sam is talking to Ted in the Green Dragon. He says his cousin Hal saw a treeman(obviously Hal was not good at telling the gender of an Ent). Hal saw the treeman walking way beyond the "North Moors", in the Northfarthing. Since the Old Forest is east of the Shire, I would not look for Entwives there.

Another fact that has not been mentioned is that Fangorn and the Old Forest are the only remnants of the huge forest in Middle-Earth that existed in the First Age

Remember that entwives are not alike ents, they are bent over for taking care of the soil, as Treebeard said.

I don't see why there couldn't be Entwives in the Old Forest and then just one walking around in the northfarthing.
