Don't like the weather? - Sue God

Quote:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A court in Nebraska is being asked to cast judgement on the ultimate judge -- God.

State lawmaker Ernie Chambers filed a lawsuit Friday against the Almighty -- acknowledging he/she goes by numerous aliases -- for causing "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues" and other alliterative catastrophes.

The suit, Chambers vs God, asks the court for a "permanent injunction ordering defendant (God) to cease certain harmful activities and the making of terrorist threats" which affect innumerable persons, including Chambers's constituents.

It asserts that God is "the admitted perpetrator" of such acts and said that God's omnipresence gives the local Douglas County District Court jurisdiction in the suit, adding that God's omniscience eliminates the need to issue a formal notice of the lawsuit.

Chambers told local media he filed the suit to make a point about frivolous lawsuits frequently seen in US courts, citing a recent one against a judge.

He asked the court to award him an unspecified summary judgment against God, or, in the alternative, issue a permanent injunction against God engaging in the damaging acts cited in the filing.

Neither God nor his/her spokespersons could be contacted for comment.

My thinking is god will settle out of court. Either that or a plague of frogs will hit all of Nebraska...

I thought it was an original idea.

I'm curious to see how far this sort of parody could continue through the legal system. It could be interesting if they filed for a restraining order.

I'm afraid, and slightly confused. I need someone to hold.
Though, that is a neat idea, I wonder if, someday, someone will actually sue God. I'd like to be there.

'God' apparently responds to lawsuit'

LINCOLN, Neb. - A legislator who filed a lawsuit against God has gotten something he might not have expected: a response. One of two court filings from "God" came Wednesday under otherworldly circumstances, according to John Friend, clerk of the Douglas County District Court in Omaha.

"This one miraculously appeared on the counter. It just all of a sudden was here — poof!" Friend said.

State Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha sued God last week, seeking a permanent injunction against the Almighty for making terroristic threats, inspiring fear and causing "widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth's inhabitants."

Chambers, a self-proclaimed agnostic who often criticizes Christians, said his filing was triggered by a federal lawsuit he considers frivolous. He said he's trying to makes the point that anybody can sue anybody.

Not so, says "God." His response argues that the defendant is immune from some earthly laws and the court lacks jurisdiction.

It adds that blaming God for human oppression and suffering misses an important point.

"I created man and woman with free will and next to the promise of immortal life, free will is my greatest gift to you," according to the response, as read by Friend.

There was no contact information on the filing, although St. Michael the Archangel is listed as a witness, Friend said.

A second response from "God" disputing Chambers' allegations lists a phone number for a Corpus Christi law office. A message left for that office was not immediately returned Thursday.

Attempts to reach Chambers by phone and at his Capitol office Thursday were unsuccessful.

...

Yeah. Right.
Ill believe that when the sky bleeds and gapes open to swallow us all.
WTF-ever.

hehe, nice initiative though. It is true that there are some ridiculous lawsuits going on in America and my guess would be that it's the same here. It's like you don't have your own common sense or responsibility anymore. If there is something you don't like: sue.
The answer to everything...? Perhaps this ridiculous case will make some people realize how foolish they are acting, allthough I can also imagine that a lot of people will be offended by this lawsuit.

Considering the fact that god isn't a member of any recognized world nation, I think he could be considered an unlawful combatant and incarcerated indefinitely in Guantanamo.

IIRC a while back a member of Congress demanded that all references to an"Act of God" be stripped from Federal disaster regulations and notices on grounds of violation of separation of Church and State.

The Congressman thought that it wasn't fair that the only time that God could be mentioned by the government was when He was getting blamed for something.
