The Oscars!

So, did anyone watch them? Any thoughts? The 79th Academy Awards. The winner of Best Picture was The Departed, in case anyone didn't know.

Well, personally I was surprised that Happy Feet won Best Animated Feature Film. I thought Cars would win, but wanted Monster House to win. I had fun watching, but I'm going to bed now.

Hollywood is in love with penguins and militant enviromentalism so its not really a surprise.

I'm only just hearing about the results of the Oscars. I generally dont watch or even follow it, but the boarders at the ranch sure do. For a while talk of it even eclipses talk about horses. Oh well.

Things are good BB, which movies did you want to win?

I was rooting for Kevin O'Connel.

Nominated for Sound Mixing for the 19th time!!!!!

(This time for Apocalypto)

19 bloody times and no wins!

..19 times, year after year he gets nominated and turns up , hoping ... writing a short speech each time ....

19 scrumpled up speeches in his wardrobe!

19!

I am absolutely and thoroughly disgusted with "The Academy," academy of dunces and philistines is more like it. Peter O'Toole is one of the greatest acting geniuses we've had, ever, in the history of cinema, one of the greatest, and here he is, still actually alive and still working , brilliant as ever, and these foul little morons pass him up - an eigth time, after eight best-actor noms, which include his unbelieveably brilliant work in such timeless classics as Lawrence of Arabia (one of my very, very favourite films incidentally) and Lion in Winter. And no offense to Forest Whittaker, but come ON!!! Forest freakin' Whittaker over Peter O'Toole??? Those academy voters stay way too smoked out on the crack, methinks. I am totally disgusted and I say to HELL with this award and this "Academy." I've had it with these confetti-brained bim-bots. Had it. Absolutely had it. Idiots.

I concur Peter O'Toole should have had his oscar years ago. I haven't seen Forrest Whitaker so I can't judge but my gut reaction was like yours, give O'Toole his oscar and call it good.

Absolutely agree. However much I like Gregoray Peck, it was O'Toole who deserved the gold in '62.

Lawrence of Arabia is incidentally also one of my favorite films too.

The Academy awards get stupider every year. Michael Caine should've at least got a nod for his supporting role in The Prestige (I thought Christian Bale was darn good in that one, too). I'll definately give Helen Mirien her Oscar--anyone brave enough to play a living monarch deserves it. But The Departed for Best Film?? Get out. The story was good, but I can't say that the movie as a whole was anything special. And why did Babel keep coming up nominated? Everyone I talk to thinks it's a piece of junk.

... Anyway.

The Departed got that because it was Scorsese's baby, and the stupid "academy" finally caved undr the pressure to give this particular filmmaking genius his well-deserved props, but then by that rationale they should've done the same thing for Peter O'Toole. Or, no - scratch all that, they should've had the brains to give Scorsese best picture & director for his real masterpieces in the FIRST place, films like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, and Peter O'Toole should've been granted an Oscar for his Lawrence of Arabia, or Lion in Winter.

Screw the Oscars. And like 90% of the actresses at the Oscars wear horribly ugly clothes anymore; am I the only one who's noticing this??? What the hell happened to glamourous beauty? For the last 3 years straight I've been scrutinising the Oscar dresses at each event, and they've almost all been grotesque, at worst, and nauseating, at best.

I am so dsgusted with hollywood at this point. Oh, Hollywood, my dear, crazy Hollywood, what have you become? Something needs to be done. There needs to be an artistic and cultural revolution in Hollywood, and soon, before it all completely dies beyond resuscitation, forever...

Too right. The Oscars is onanism writ large. Give it a couple of years and Hollywood will completely disappear up its own arse.

Come to think of it, give it a couple of years and maybe their dorito-chugging constituency will all be watching home made snuff movies on YouTube and the whole thing will collapse.

It seems that as soon as "art" gets money and power (real or imagined), it becomes degenerate, derivative and worthless. A bit like religion.

Cheers RTR!

I have lost count of the number of times I've come out of the cinema wanting to disembowel all hollywood executive/PR types.

Or at least get my money back...
