Pope Hospitalized

Pope John Paul II has been hospitalized for flue and respritory problems. I figured I'd start this thread. I'm sort of wonderin gif he'll be able to survive things. From what the media is saying - it seems pretty serious and I don't think with his failing health that he'll come out of it.

I've sort of wondered how he's been able to do his duties anyway. When I hear the pope said this or the pope said that - it seems more like there is a committee or a person behind him who is saying these things - because in public he can barely speak.

Well lets not bury the old guy before hes ready to go now. From what I heard hes not in eminent danger of death just yet. In fact they dont even have him in intensive care and they said his temperature is back to normal. Remember hes come back from much worse. Whats more his handlers have been busy scheduling his meetings for next week including one with C. Rice on Tuesday. But hey you never know whatll happen so I guess we'll see over the next few days. So far the Cardinals havent been summoned...

Hmmm....who's in line to be the next pope? I don't keep up with this kind of thing.
I'm not sure if I think it would be better for him to die, cause he seems so frail...or if I want him to live longer because it will be sad for so many people when he dies...

I've been thinking along the lines of what jerseydevil said. Whenvever I've seen him on TV, he seems to be very frail. His heart seems to want to continue with his duties, but I'm not sure if his body is up to it anymore. There's an article about his hospitalization here.

The cardinals cast ballots, electing the next pope in a carefully controlled process. As Insidious said, the situation isn't yet considered grave enough to summon the cardinals. I don't believe we could say that anyone is "in line".

He may not be in grave danger at the moment - but in his condition - anything can happen. He is NOT in the best of shape at all. If he is having respritory problems - it could very easily develop into pneumonia or something. Also- the vatican has a history of keeping dire news secret until the last minute I think.

I would be VERY sad if Pope John Paul II kicks the clogs now .

I think that what JP is saying is indeed coming from him--he sticks mostly to writing now I believe, so someone else will be saying much of it for him, but I'm sure he's actually behind the things.

It was just confirmed that the Pope has been given his last rights. It seems to be pretty serious now.

I knew he was very ill, but I didn't know he was dying. I hope he's not in pain or anything.

yup: have just checked this out: seems a precautionary thing at the moment (re: last rights) but it looks serious.

as regards the commitee etc (re: original post), well with respect - i take that as read (even with full health the pope himself (generically - i.e. whomever, whenever) has always himself historically been less than the Papacy itself as an organisation - no disrepect to Catholics - just an historical observation. With his recent illness i think there can be no doubt that this has been even more pronounced.

On a not too serious note though ; i'm sure we'd all concur with JD that we'd LOVE the newly elected Pope to be French!

P.s.
i am not a catholic myself but to all whom the Pope is important in whatever personal way: i don't mean any disrespect by being whimsical, and my best wishes go to you and to the Pope at this time

Not catholic, though i do wish the pope the best now...That would make me laugh if the new pope was french, though i dont think that will happen. Really makes me wonder at who is gonna get the pointy hat next....John Paul II was pretty interesting if you read about when he was younger.

I fear the pope isn't going to be with us much longer. The latest news says he has suffered heart failure and that he is in a grave condition.

aww

He's one of my dad's heroes.

For school once we had to read a Christian biography and I chose one of him; extremely interesting, he's completely dedicated like no one I've seen, all his work during WWII in Poland was something special.

The Vatican says Pope John Paul II is gravely ill but in a stable condition after he suffered a heart attack earlier in the day.
The Pontiff is also having breathing problems.
The Vatican's chief spokesman, Joaquin Navarro-Valls, says the Pope is still in a serious condition after suffering heart failure and septic shock, although he says the Pontiff is conscious and serene.
Mr Navarro-Valls says the Pope has celebrated mass and has met with key Vatican cardinals.
Earlier, he confirmed the 84-year-old had received holy communion for the dying on Thursday after his condition deteriorated.
Our reporter in Rome, Jean di Marino, says the spokesman became emotional as he took a question on the Pontiff's health.
He said it was an image he had never seen in 26 years - the Pope in such difficulty and yet appearing so serene.
A medical team is treating the Pontiff at the Holy See.
He is not expected to return to hospital.

Apparently, Italian media reports said the Pope has passed away already. The Vatican hasn't confirmed... but it seems like he's not going to pass the night. Or so I've heard on TV.

I was confirmed a bit ago that the Pope has died. I wonder how long it will take for them to elect another.
