As a life-long fan of the worst team in the American League (yes, that would be Detroit...) I doubt that A-Rod would do them any good even if they were able to afford him.

I live in the past...the glory-days of 1968 and 1983.

Now I live in a AAA minor league town. I love going to games and can't wait for summer!

well he is arguably the best player in baseball. Between him and Barry Bonds at least. But yeah he hasnt actually won anything yet. I guess thats why he went to the Yanks. He figured it was his best shot at a ring. And yer probably better off without him he would have completely paralyzed a club like Seattle with the size of his contract. And it could be worse. You could still be paying Jr. $150 million to be injured.

Who cares? The Yankees spent all that money last year and what happened? They beat the Red Sox on a miracle Game 7 home run (stupid curse) and then go to the World Series and get beat by the Florida Marlins. The Florida Marlins. Payroll is nothing unless you've got good players.

Admittedly, A-rod is one of the best. However, in my slightly biased opinion, the Sox are still better.

Only if you mean RED Sox... and I take it you do. WHITE Sox are still on the slow train to nowhere.

Go, Cubbies! If it were to come down to Cubs/Red Sox, how could I choose? When that looked like a possibility this past fall, I didn't know what to do! Unfortunately, it didn't happen

The Yankees have been over-promoted and over-rated for decades. If determination and the loyalty of fans have anything to do with it, the "curse" on the Red Sox will soon be lifted. I love Boston and their fans, and I'd absolutely love to see games at both Fenway and Wrigley Field! (Spent several sunny summer days at Tiger Stadium in my youth...)

Can you tell I'm really conflicted about this???

You do realize that we were this close to the end of the world last year, right? Instead, it turned out the one way that I wouldn't have been happy. *grumbles* Stupid Yankees... stupid Marlins...

Maddox back in Chicago? From my favorite NL team to my second favorite. Go Cubs.

True, true. Jr.'s timing couldn't have been better.

But boy I miss our '95 ALCS team. That was our first taste of Glory.

While the point is true, there are some benfits to having the higher relative revenues than other teams (Yankees compared to other MLB teams).

Ability to take greater chances than other teams. The Yankees can afford to make a 17 million dollar mistake that many teams (ie Montreál, Minnesota, etc.) cannot. Drew Henson case in point. Drew will not play baseball. Yankees go and spend money to acquire Alex R.

Ability to keep (ie pay) your own players and still be able to acquire (buy) other players. Yankees are able to spend the money to keep the players they want (Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter) and are still able to spend money to acquire, via free agency or trade, the players they think they need (Jason Giambi, Mike Mussina)
The Yankees still need to spend their money wisely and effectively, since money does not guarentee championships. (See New York Rangers for case in point. )

Khamûl,

I think that on paper the Red Sox are better than the Yankees, since I think that having Good pitching is better than having good hitting. (Case in point, the 1996, 1998-2000 New York Yankees)

Until the Red Sox beat the Yankees, I will still expect ABC (Another Boston Choke)

i think this may be becoming less and less true since the yankees spend so much more than most other teams (which the red sox do too, to a smaller extent)... when you start to approach spending five times what other teams spend (or even twice as much) you don't even have to spend all that money wisely

this is why ultimately, i put much less weight in a competitive sense on a baseball championship in the last twenty or so years, than i do on a football one

the marlins are a great case and point... when they spend tons of money they can win, when they don't, they have no chance

spending money does not assure you a championship, but not spending money assures that you will never get a championship
