Beautiful poem sun-star! I should check in on this thread more often

Lilian

I

Airy, fairy Lilian,
Flitting, fairy Lilian,
When I ask her if she love me
Claps her tiny hands above me,
Laughing all she can;
She'll not tell me if she love me,
Cruel little Lilian.

II

When my passion seeks
Pleasance in love-sighs
She, looking thro' and thro' me
Thoroughly to undo me,
Smiling, never speaks:
So innocent-arch, so cunning-simple,
From beneath her gathered wimple
Glancing with black-beaded eyes
Till the lightning laughters dimple
The baby-roses in her cheeks;
Then away she flies.

III

Prythee weep, May Lilian!
Gaiety without eclipse
Wearieth me, May Lilian:
Thro' my very heart it thrilleth
When from crimson-threaded lips
Silver-treble laughter trilleth:
Prythee weep, May Lilian.

IV

Praying all I can
If prayers will not hush thee,
Airy Lilian
Like a rose-leaf I will crush thee,
Fairy Lilian.

-Alfred Lord Tennyson

That's such a brilliant ending. I love how it suddenly switches the mood.

Yeah, Tennyson had a way with words
I also like the musical quality of the poem, not many poets can manage it that well.

What if I say I shall not wait?
What if I burst the fleshly gate,
And pass escaped to thee?
What if I file this mortal off,
See where it hurt me-that's enough-
And wade in liberty?

They cannot hurt us anymore,
Dungeons may call and guns implore
Unmeaning, now, to me
As laughter was an hour ago,
Or laces or a traveling show
Or who died yesterday.

-Emily Dickinson

(Definitely not sure about the punctuation)

Don't you think the idea of two lovers' souls longing to be free is an echo of Tolkien's "Release from bondage"?

i like poetry...i write poetry too!!!

UNFORTUNATE FATE

Scream into pieces
Rouse the tempest of death
A thousand lustful secrets
Pleading wiht the tongue you can't use.

The limit of lies
The truth of the silent
Stain silver blood across her lips
Little ivory kisses on her burning brow.

Doomed now to fall still
The angels fly the breathless die
Spew out words of true immortal sin
Who will tempt the next poor soul?

by moi. Rozlyn...so whar do you think?

It's pretty dramatic. I like "the breathless die." I wonder about the ivory kisses, though; what does that mean - why are the kisses ivory? Also, why are the blood stains silver? Pretty colour images but I wonder what they symbolise. After reading & talking about Dante's inferno lately over on the other thread, it brings to mind a Dante-esque sort of scene, which is nice and visually dramatic. Very bloody; very religiously mythy, like an old cathedral painting come to life.

Roz! It's nice hearing from you. I saw you posted in the Writers Workshop too.

I have to agree with Lotesse's "Very bloody; very religiously mythy". And - "The angels fly the breathless die" - great.

My favourite poets are Hungarians - esp. one guy, who could play with the sound and rhythm of our language the way no one else could, IMO. It's always a joy reading him.

But recently, in my literature seminar, I'm getting to know more English-speaking poets. Funny that none of the "biggies" caught my eye, but a poem we had for a fun reading exercise. It was from a guy called Paul Fleischman (sp? ) from his book 'Joyful Noise - Poems for Two Voices'. Interesting, because it's a really simple text, written for children IIRC, but the uniqueness of it is that "for two voices" thing. It sounds great when read out aloud.

never heard of dante-esque thing...ivory kisses on her burning brow...well i always imagined ivory being cold so...ivroy kisses on her burning brow seemed to make some sense..and with the silver blood...everyone always uses red or crimson for the colour of blood..i thought i would be different and plus i kinda got the idea from harry potter and the unicorns blood...being pure and innocent

also about me poem UNFORTUNATE FATE, the girl who has a burning deadly fever is innocent and should not have fallen ill in the first place and she is pure ( because of the silver blood being innocent and pure) so she could not be sinful or evil...so that is not the cause of her illness. the angels give her ivory kisses on her burning brow, trying to bless an innocent and pure girl tainted with a disease. Ivory---being cool and soothing to the fever's burn... if this absoutly makes any sense to any of you...but it makes really big sense to me....since i wrote it. funny how the things that you write makes perfect sense and then ones you didnot sometimes dont...wierd. and that is my conclusion of my poem UNFORTUNATE FATE.

THERE IS

There is a girl in the corner
There is a man in the bathroom
There is blood on the counter
There is blood on the bed.

There is battered, broken in the corner
There is abuse in the bathroom
There is blood in the sink
All over the walls.

Helpless in the corner
Murder in the bathroom
Blood on the floor
Blood on the couch.

Red and black
Take it back
You had your chance
You stole a glance.

There is sobbing in the corner
There is fear in the bathroom
There is blood on your knife
All over the fridge.

Take it back
Wind it back
Red and black
You had your chance.

There is shattered in the corner
There is bitterness in the bathroom
There is blood on the glass
There is blood on the pictures.

Take it back
Red and black
You stole a glance
You had your chance.

Red and black
Wind it back
Take it back
Red and black.

There is death in the corner
There is murderer in the bathroom
There is blood in the corner
There is blood on his hands.

by me! what do you all think?

William Shakespeare:

When my love swears that she is made of truth
I do believe her, though I know she lies
That she might think me some untutor'd youth
Unlearned in the world's false subtleties.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although I know my years are past the best,
Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue
On both sides, then, is simple truth suppress'd.
But wherefore says not she she is unjust
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O, love's best habit is in seeming trust
And age in love loves not to hear years told.
And thus I lie with her, she lies with me
In both our faults by lies we flattered be.

There was a time in my life
when I enjoyed being alone
Spending time by myself
just the two of us
just me and my thoughts

That was before it happened
before everything changed
Now the solitude is a little too lonely
I inevitably just sit
and think about her
and wonder why
