The most pathetic thing I do
Is play I hear from you -
I make believe until my Heart
Almost believes it too
But when I break it with the news
You knew it was not true
I wish I had not brokent it -
Goliah - so would you -

-Emily Dickinson

My favourite ever poem is "Dulce et Decorum est" by Wilfrid Owen. I also like "The Lady of Shalott!"
I cannot write poetry. I am hopeless.

I took a creative writing class this year, so I ended up writing a lot of poetry. . .maybe I'll post something if I can find anything remotely good. . .

Here's one that I wrote after seeing Shackelton's Antarctic Adventure at the IMAX.

ANTARCTICA

Frozen islands in clear blue waters,
They are covered ina pure white blanket.
Their beauty, and that of their surroundings, seems to call to the soul, saying,
"Come! Come and explore my untouched surface and discover my innocent beauty,
For there is none like me except in this one place where few have dared to venture!"
And yet as I listen to their call, there is something else I hear,
A sound quite different form the soft whispereing that was first heard.
And now I see the truth, that these beuatiful works of creation are perilous and deadly,
And the misery that lies beneath their deceptive masks is all too real.
The cold winds drive me back, and I must be content to admire at a distance
Thses lovely giants which I cannot conquer.

Its been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again, but the Trombone has marked the time. This field, this section, this band is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and could be again. Oh, people will come . . . people will most definitely come."

Wow, that's really great. I always admire people who can write poetry and don't have to make it rhyme. That was cool though because while reading it you actually felt like you were on a ship or somewhere staring at Antartica. Very cool.

I love to write poetry. I can remember that ever since the fourth grade I was inspired to write. This inspiration was easily fueled by my love for Shakespeare and, in general, using language to its full extent.
I tend to write fairly long ones, but i think I'll post one of them now. If you don't want to read it, skip it.
This is a fairly morbid poem that I wrote in response to a challenge to write a morbid poem. I got the inspiration from reading "Diary of a Madman". I call it, "The Man in the Way"
(a / indicates a line break)

There was a man, / A man today,
A very odd man / Who got in my way.
I politely asked him / To move aside.
But when I asked / He never complied.
Again and again and again I tried
And yet this man would not move aside.
He was making me angry. / Still in my way!
Though where I was going / I could not say.
I threatened to hurt him, / Call him disgrace!
And when he moved not / I punched at his face!
The impact was felt! / Though it felt more like air....
Then I suddenly realized / The man wasn't there!
Where had he gone? / That sly little fellow.
Maybe he hid / Inside of that pillow!
The wall of the pillows, / I remember thee!
A great place to hide / From someone like me!
I tore at the wall / With all of my fury!
But then I said to myself, / "Hey, what's the big hurry?"
He'll come out eventually / And then he'll have to deal with me!
Just then to big men / Came right through the door.
They struck my head / And I fell to the floor.
I awoke feeling strange, / As if I had died.
Then I suddenly noticed / My hands were tied!
Strapped to a bench, / Yet standing upright!
These straps were holding me / Way too tight!
Now without warning / There's a noose on my head.
No! It's a snake trying / To strangle me dead!
There's a hole in the floor! / I'm dropping real fast!
OWWW!!!
My neck didn't break.... / How long can I last?
There are the friends / Of the man in the way...
They came to see me / Die today!
then hide behind the glass and cry,
For they don't know that I.... i ca....can't d....d.....die.

Quite long, quite morbid, yet I think I did a fairly good job on it. If you want more you can just PM me. Or just let me know if you liked this one. If not, say so as well. I'm always taking requests.

Here is part of a poem from Fernando Pessoa:.

Oblique rain
III
The Great Sphinx of Egypt dreams into this paper. . .
I write--and she appears through my transparent hand
And at the corner of the paper the pyramids arise. . .
I write--am troubled to see the tip of my quill
Become King Cheops' profile. . .
All of a sudden I stop. . .
Everything darkens. . .I fall into an abyss made of time. . .
I'm buried under the pyramids writing verses under the clear light of this lamp
And all Egypt crushes me from above through the lines I draw with the quill. . .

I hear the Sphinx laugh inside
The sound of my quill running on paper. . .
A huge hand goes through me not being able to see it,
Sweeps everything to the corner of the ceiling that stands behind me,
And on the paper where I write, between it and the quill that writes
Lies King Cheops' cadaver, staring at me with wide open eyes,
And in between our looks crossing each other the river Nile runs
And a happiness of sailing boats wanders
In a diffuse diagonal
Between me and what I think. . .

Funerals of King Cheops in old gold and Me!. . .

And in the original Portuguese:

A Grande Esfinge do Egito sonha pôr este papel dentro...
Escrevo - e ela aparece-me através da minha mão transparente
E ao canto do papel erguem-se as pirâmides...
Escrevo - perturbo-me de ver o bico da minha pena
Ser o perfil do rei Quéops...
De repente paro...
Escureceu tudo... Caio por um abismo feito de tempo...
Estou soterrado sob as pirâmides a escrever versos * luz clara deste candeeiro

Numa diagonal difusa
Entre mim e o que eu penso...

Funerais do rei Queóps em ouro velho e Mim!...

One of my poems was published last year in a Canadian "workbook" for students learning English as a second language! I was so excited...it was really cool. Especially fun to see it in the book and read the comments the editor of the book wrote about it to help the students understand it! Yay poems!

Was this it Eärniel??

cats no less liquid than their shadows

But Garina, my fav. poem is 'the lady of shallot' by tennyson too!!

'Heard a carol, mournful, holy,
Chanted loudly, chanted lowly,
Till her blood was frozen slowly,
And her eyes were darkened wholly,
Turn'd to tower'd Camelot. '

Is just one part. I love that bit

I'll find a link toThe Lady of Shallot

While i enjoy writing poetry, i write more lyrics.
Here is an example of two of my songs. Im not amazing, but i love writing!!

Yes, that's the one! I think it describes cats perfectly.

The Lady of Shalot seems to be recurring favorite poem. As it should be for such a beautiful poem.

The chorus from 'dark star' reminds me of the sort of lyrics a sci-fi cartoon would have. I've seen more cartoons than is good for me.

I love poetry. It means so much to me that I can't even describe it or put it into words. Some of my favorite poets are Emily Dickenson, Shakespeare, Poe, Frost, Dorothy Parker (Solace), Lewis Carrol (Jabberwocky), and oh so many more (including Becca and Kezia, two of my friends). I love to write poetry, but I don't think that I'm all that good at it... others think that I am, though. I take a Writer's Workshop thing every year. Basically, it's just a bunch of teenagers who have nothing to do but write, so we go here so that some of our stuff can be published in Somewhere Between and we can get free food. But, when I'm bored in class (which is often), I write and, sometimes, come up with some of my best stuff... I AM odd....

If you are ever bored out of your mind and want to sample my 'stuff', you cango here. Hey, I did say 'bored out of your mind'...

I'm a poet and I teach poetry (in creative writing and in lit class ).

I've published mostly in college journals, including the one at my alma mater which I edited while in college.

*Some* of my favorite poets are T.S. Eliot, Anne Sexton, Mark Strand, Robert Hayden and Dylan Thomas. There are many, many others but those are a few of the biggies

*edited for typos (no laughing Starlite!)

That's really cool! I think I might want to be an English or creative writing teacher when I grow up. I LOVE English.

That is a very beautiful poem. Of course, I can't understand a word of it, but I think Finnish is a beautiful language. I am reading Beowulf at present, but I don't know if it counts for a favorite poem.
I also like anne sexton mithrea, though she is very disturbing. I like Mary Oliver, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Longfellow, and Yeats as well.

Well, thiis poem totally stinks, but there you go . It's one that I wrote, but I still haven't thought of a name for it yet. Tell me what you think.

You walked my through the forest green
And kept me safe from evil.
Your love was reflected in my amber eyes
And your love in my heart.
As we traveled through our lives together,
My love for you grew stronger.
You left your home and followed me
But now you follow me no longer.
How I have longed for you in these far-distant days
How I have longed to feel your touch!
But nay, I could not stop the arrow
That pierced you shining heart.
I slew the one who strung that bow
But it could not help me save you.
Hard was that dark, deep fall you took
Into the ebony night.
The shadow has taken my love, my light, away from me.
So now I walk the path alone
With no one there to guide me.
Now as I think of you long, slender hand
Wrapped around my own,
I walk into the forest green ever on and on.
But lo! There is a light ahead
As pure as the dawning sun!
As I walk through the shimmering mist
Vanishing into the brightness,
I think of where its end will lead me-
To where you are, in my heart.

I remember this thread...

I wrote this last night.

Posers
Smile for the camera
Hey, show some teeth
Let the film catch a lie
Because
We're all posing
Modeling to the world
What we think we want to be

It sounded better last night.

That's good starr! Sounds like you have feelings about posers! I can't stand people like that myself.

I like this one of mine...

Rage

It starts off calm with only tension,
Everyone quiet not wanting to mention,
The fact we’ve not spoken for thirteen days,
Do they think it’s just a passing phase?

Then when we speak the anger comes out,
And everyone surrounds us as we shout.
The yells cease
Silence ensues
Then we walk away mad
Our friendship is gone but was a good one we had.

Well i only said i like it! No one else has to!
