Well, they may not have mentioned ale specifically, but I'm sure there was plenty at Bilbo's party......

There is a bar here that serves HUGE mugs of beer (36ounces or something like that). The mugs are thick and heavy and huge handled, and it is proportional to the hobbits & their pints!!!

I know for a "fact" that Aragorn drank Crown Royal (show-off).

Ted Sandyman drank Miller Beer.

Sauron drank Zima, which explains why he was always in such a foul mood.

Not concerning a brand, but a vintage:

"The Northfarthing barley was so fine that the beer of 1420 malt was long remembered and became a byword. Indeed a generation later one might hear an old gaffer in an inn, after a good pint of well-earned ale, put down his mug with a sigh: 'Ah! that was proper fourteen-twenty, that was!'" (The Grey Havens)

In the Hobbit, the stuff that Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves smoked was referred to as Tobacco, as Bilbo points out to Gandalf,
Quote:
"And a very fine morning for a pipe of tobacco out of doors, into the bargain. If you have a pipe about you, sit down and have a fill of mine! There's no hurry, we have all the day before us!"
So pipeweed is tobacco. I don't think the professor had any mind-altering herb in mind.

The best beer in the Northfarthing is old 1420. I'm still searching the store refrigerators for some. Let me know if you run across a sixpack.

In fact, if you check some phonebooks in Kentucky where they grow a lot of tobacco and use hobbittish expressions, you will find names like Baggins and Took. Why? Because once Prof Tolkien had a student from Kentucky whose ways were so interesting that he spent time listening to him tell stories of home, while sitting together smoking pipes. My source is Guy Davenport, Geography of the Imagination.

That's pretty neat. Must check out that book.

On the subject of ale, I would imagine that and meade (and maybe entdraughts) are easier to brew than say a lager or a pilsner. So ale woud be the order of the day in Middle Earth, unless your hanging with elves then it would be wine.

On the subject of pipe weed... much has been said on the topic back in early January in a thread called, "Drug Refrences". It was a very lively discussion. I'd give the url, but that doesn't seem to be working for me at the moment....

Thanks there, Elfhelm. I suspect my copy and paste method is sloppy as well.
