Grima Cries!

Ok, if this is old news to anyone at all I apologizes but I was watching the TT extended when I got to the scene where Saurumon is unleashing his army. He says, "To war!!!!!!!!" Then it flashes to Grima and you see a small tear run out of his (if your facing the tv)right eye. I went back and looked at three times!! It is a tear! Why was the rat/snake crying? I can kind of see why but...it still doesn't make much sense. Anyway I just found that and I thought it was interesting and I didn't think I'd seen it mentioned anywhere on the Entmoot.

I thought that it was because of Eowyn. Saruman is unleashing his army to go attack Helms Deep with orders to leave no-one alive. Eowyn is at Helms Deep, so Grima will probably think that she's going to be killed and of course he 'loves' her. At least that's the reason that always comes to my head when I'm watching the movies.

I took the tear as a sign that GrĂ*ma wasn't thoroughly evil. When he saw Saruman's huge army and realized how much destruction the army would be able to cause, he just couldn't hold back his tears.

Not only was Grima upset about the distruction Sauruman's army was capable of causing, he also realized that he had just given Saruman the key to the distruction of Helm's Deep by telling him about the culvert -- the one weakness in it's defense. By doing this, Grima realized he had doomed Rohan and that the world of Men would soon fall. He had betrayed the race of Men and he had also been utterly rejected by them. He was greiving for what he had done, but also, I think, he was feeling sorry for himself.

There was a thread (or at least a discussion in some thread) about this a while back. My opinion was the same as Lalaith Elf's. I feel very confident that the only one he felt sorry about was Eowyn (in terms of what had been laid out earlier in the movie).

Well, IMHO, Grima's eyes were just watering, because in Brad Dourif's prtrayal, his eyes are very watery the whole time!

But maybe I'm wrong!

I think he was allergic to orcs. He didn't know until then that they were there so they may have triggered a psychophysiological response.

Either that or they were trying to show he was somehow an unwilling puppet of Saruman and was released momentarily from his control while the Orcs were being riled by the wizard. Possibly he was now of no futher use to anyone. Self pity, self-loathing ang despair as he stared into the abyss of his future.

or the allergy thing.

Well, I'd be crying as well, if I saw an army of that size wearing no pants.

Maybe they cut out the scene where Saruman tells Grima he never really loved him and was just using him.

OR, he could have pricked his finger whilst mending Saruman's pants of many colours.

*imagines Saruman standing around waiting in a pair matching many colored boxers and undershirt.*

Well the reason that I have come up with for the most part, is that Grima was not totally evil, he was part of the Rohirric race, he was born and raised there in Rohan. And he felt that connection with the Rohirrim, even if he has been twisted by Saruman, and at the realization that ALL of Rohan was to be destroyed, including Eowyn, (as previously mentioned) was such a shock to him and it overwhelmed him to the point that he couldn't keep back all the tears.

But thats just my personal opinion...

I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me;
For our days are ending and our years failing.
I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing.
Long are the waves on the Last Shore falling,
Sweet are the voices in the lost Isle calling,
In Eresëa, in Elvenhome that no man can discover,
Where the leaves fall not: land of my people forever!”

Good logic, though. Just because the book didn't record a scene like that in the movie doesn't mean it didn't happen in the story...as long as it makes sense, which this seems to.

It was windy out! I think I remember Saruman's hair flying around a little bit, and, as Finrod Felagund said, he has watery eyes.
