Geek!

Alright, admit it, you're a geek. You're signed up at a LotR message board and you're posting in the Star Wars forum.

So now that we're through with that, which do you think is more geeky? Does liking Star Wars, the epic sci-fi movie series, or liking LotR, the timeless literary classic make you a bigger geek?
I'm undecided, but I'm curious to see what you think.

BTW, is there no way to add a poll?

If by liking you mean totally immersing yourself in the world of either Tolkien or Lucas then I'd say Tolkien is the more geeky (geekier?) Everyone can go watch the StarWars movies and be hooked but not everyone enjoys reading things as much and would have the willpower to get through a long book. That is my basic reasoning.

My opinion was reached after I made a scientific survey (I say scientific survey with tongue in cheek). I told some of my friends I liked Star Wars, the reactions ranged from "okay, whatever", "YODA!", "detachable light sabers woo-hoo", your basic I like that movie too type of comments. I later say I like Lord of the Rings . . . there was silence and then "oh, I've seen the movies", "I like the big battle with the elves", and my favorite comment "You actually read the book?! The movie was better", and my other favorite comment "There's a book?". (a BOOK, singular )

So, at least among some of my friends, I would have to say LOTR is the 'geekier' of the two. So, I would agree with Anglorfin because my reasoning is also that there is that dreaded book reading involved.

This is, of course, just my opinion. I am aware that Star Wars does have books but for reasons I can't articulate right now, it's just not the same.

SW is geekier b/c it has soo many more useless facts to memorize. There are over 80 books out, each adding to the numerous species lists, ship types and character total. There is an entire encyclopedia (which i have read, BTW), as well as countless games for various game systems, like Gameboy, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and Game Cube, to name but a few. To be a LOTR geek, you also have to be somewhat of a nerd. I know a couple of SW geeks who would not be able to get through LOTR, simply because the reading level is higher than they are able to read easily.

Ah, the days of the Jedi Council. Yup, the board creators met at a STARWARS board and the first wave of members were all from there.

Bmilder used to be a complete SW geek :P

Before TolkienTrail, his website was "Benjamins tolkien and starwars page"

Oh, that was good. So he gave SW its own entire forum at the Ent Moot, as he should have.

I think the SW ppl are geekier. Some of them are really crazy. I was looking at the message bored on the offical ( i think it was) web page and this women was asking if she was going to far by wanting to name her son Boba. After her husbend said no way she named her baby Luke because she couldn't have a baby with out naming it something star wars. Those people are much geekier then LOTR people becuase we aren't as insane like that. Sure I may give my son of daughter a LOTR middle name, but never the first, that would be cruel. The hard core SW people are kinda scary. My friend of mine is always comenting on the way in Ep 4 when (or around the time) we first see Leia on the death star darth slightly pulls her into his chest. just slightly VERY slightly. My friend says this is becuase she is Darths daughter, not because the actress has been on her feet all day and may slightly be shiting her wieght. those people are crazy.

If you like one, you are not a geek. If you like both, such as I do, THEN you're geek. One is normal, both is geeky.

I've watched the movies and I liked them enough to start reading the books but I didn't like it enough to the point of obbsesion(sp?). Yeah I liked LOTR enough to the books too but I like the SW books a lot more than I liked the LOTR books.
