Math Problems

This will probably get deleted But I am making this as a Math Problem thread. Here, you can post your math problems if you need help, or just stump other people with your hardest brain teasers! I will start off. Find the LARGEST 3-DIGIT NUMBER. You may use exponents, etc. Good luck!

Even though the shadows fall and the darkness enters you will always be with me. I remember one thing about you. Your eyes. I used to look in them like pools of blue water. I could stare at them forever like the dark blue sky on a cloudy night. As I sit here still watching the stars I think of you, but the one thing I remember is your eyes.

I don't know.
How about.... -a(x - 3)-4 if a= -6 and x= 8.
This is pretty easy. It's from Algebra I.

well... if a= -6 and it was -a, would that mean 6 (double negative)? or was that a typo or something?

if double negative, 26, right?

What's 1+2+3+4+5+........... all the way to +100?

The largest 3-digit number? Isn't that just 999?

Or am I completely missing the point here?

// is very tempted to put up his university-level calculus problems

That's nothing. I can't add.

On the other hand, the answer to your problem is 1+2+3+4+5+...+100 = 5050. And yes, I did that without a calculator.

Hehe... how'd you do it? did you actually do 1+2+3... or did you do 1+100 = 101 2+99=101 3+98=101 x 50?

The summation formula for 1+2+3+...+n actually reduces to (n+1)n/2

In this case, 100*101/2 = 50*101 = 5050

Hey, now here's a thread where I might actually know some answers! I love calculus (I know that is scary). It's funny how people think your smart when you study maths. I am doing third year maths at uni and I really don't feel smart. And I probably *should* be doing my structures assignment that's due on Monday instead of hanging out at the 'moot.
Hey, IP, you can put up your problems, see if I've actually aborbed anything over the last few years.
All right, here's a sample from my assignment (I've think I've gotten the right answer):
Evaluate the following limit:
The limit as n tends to infinity of (n-sqrt(n+a)*sqrt(n+b))
Go on, I dare you to try it!

Oh, I wish I could. Unfortunately:
a) I can't tackle uni maths, as I am still tackling Maths Methods 1 & 2 (Logarithms- not too bad)
b) I've had enough of maths for today. Tomorrow I have tuition- even more! Yay!

BTW: I don't think 999 is the biggest 3 digit she may have been referring to. She said you could use exponentials, etc... (do they count as digits?)

I did, I did! Now tomorrow, I will have to do Probability (ugh), Linear Functions, Quadratic functions probably as well, and more Logarithms. Add to that Science (major revision), Biology (Faeces! Wooo!) and a billion other things....

Ah, Maths Methods. So very easy... Are you going to do Specialist Maths next year, Linaewen? Very icky.
Well, 999 is the largest 3 digit number. Maybe she meant find the largest number using three digits and exponents.

*sticks out tongue* Shush, you. No, I'm not doing spesh next year. I'm in year 10 - doing Methods 1 &2. Next year, I'm doing Methods 3 &4 and General Advanced or sommat. Then, year 12 I will do Specialist. Woooo! Hard work! Also doing Biol, chem, Indonesian, English...

I am sorry, but that is incorrect. That uses over 100 digits, not THREE. Only use 3 digits. Would you like to know the answer, or keep guessing because none of you are near close?

Actaually, yes. Exponents or to the ___th power do count as digits, and you can only use 3 digits
