Sauron is a Maia, the same "race" as the wizards (Gandlaf, Saruman) and the blarog. Maiar serve the Valar ("angelic" beings), and Sauron once served Melkor (aka Morgoth), who was the first "Dark Lord". You can find more info about this in The Silmarillion.

Origianly Sauron was of the Maiar of Aule, the great smith and and artisan of the Valar and was among the greatest of Aule's Maiar. He joined Morgoth in his first and susequent rebellions, as did many of the Maiar.
