Gurthang

What happened to Túrin's sword after he killed himself on it? And what about it's original twin blade, Anguirel, made from the same meteor? Were they both lost somewhere along the way?

I'm searching for an excuse to have part of either Gurthang (Anglachel) or Anguirel survive into the Third Age of Middle Earth. Is there any basis for this?

IIRC, Gurthang was buried with Turin. As for its mate, I don't recall it being mentioned what happened to it.

I don't get the point of giving names to swords.

Besides the cultrual value of naming artifact and heirlooms, and the morale value of naming weapons (a name painted onto most mordern tanks and aircraft) it was likely important for placing spells onto the weapon to make it more effective. Much such magic in many cultures and mythologies needs a 'true name' to be effective.

Gurthang was buried with Turin, but it also broke in two after Turin killed himself with it

Didn't Eol himself carry the other sword? And if so I would assume it was lost in Gondolin.

Anguirel, the mate of Anglachel, was stolen by Maeglin when he departed to Gondolin. It may have been lost in the fall of Gondolin or even taken from Maeglin when he was captured by the Enemy.

To answer the original query, I don't think it's likely that either survived.

Oyeah I forgot about Maeglin stealing it. I knew Eol didn't give it away though and in either case it probably was lost in Gondolin.

Stealing your father's sword is highly Oedipal.

I'd say Maeglin had more than a few problems...

Why not just say that Eol made more swords in secret, or kept them with the Dwarves or something.
