Gimli Speaks!

Hello everyone, i asked this in another thread but some reason i dont' think anyone noticed me *goes to the corner and cries* IN the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings Extended Version, When they are in Lothlorien, Haldir says "We have not had dealings with the Dwarves since the Dark Days." Gimli says "Well you know waht this dwarf says to that, (insert Dwarvish)" What does the Dwarvish mean! and if you know, how do you spell it in Dwarvish? please, i need to know, i have plans and i need to fulfill them. OH, and I was just kidding about the crying bit. Luv you all!

-Angie Baggins *sends kisses*

Gandalf

When I was listening to the commentary on the extended fotr DVD, I think that actors said that John had forgotten his lines, so he just sortof mumbled something. Sorry, I am not sure what he says or what it means... It might not even mean anything.

It wouldn't be that hard to figure out, Idon't think. Tolkien did invent a Dwarvish language, didn't he?

Yes. But Khuzdul is fragmentary, it's not the carefully formed language of elvish. The only bits we see in LOTR are some place names and the dwarven battle call.

I was reading the Appendixes and it said that the Dwaves NEVER shared the meanings of their languages. Except for the battle cry Gimli used at Helms Deep and a small bit he shared with the Fellowship. So....I dont know that there is anyway to find out what he said. And in anycase, it seems like it would be extremely unlikely that Aragorn would have really known what it meant.

I do want to know tho!!!

Jackson just made up some lines which sounded like Dwarvish.
There's no real meaning in it, as far as I know.

Aragorn could probobly tell that it wasn't something nice to say becuase of Gimili's tome of voice and facial expressions, on the other hand, it couls just have been a lucky guess. Now I really want to know that it means, too!

ok, it just so happens that i was watching the FOTR extended edition part 2 and have *sort of* found out what Gimli says. I can't spell too well, but it sounded like "Isk-kaqui ai-droug nul", but don't ask me what it means!

If the dialogue is actually Khuzdul then you can send in the quote (verified somehow for accuracy) to people intersted in such things. If no one else could Michael Martinez who runs a suite101 webpage on things related to Tolkien could direct you to those interested. Khuzdul is a fragmentary thing, and few people know it, it was never truly thought up, except as a vague structural skeleton. (see the foreward to silmarillion on that).

Haven't read the Silmarillion yet... don't even know how to spell it. Was Tolkien going ot make Khuzdul a complete language, and he just died to early, or was he done with it? I know it doesn't make a difference now, just curious!

i think that he wanted to keep it limited because of the fact that dwarves didnt teach it to other which is why it seems dodgy that aragorn understood what he was saying... sure you can pass for little things that he could have picked up reading like the place names and that but he wouldnt have known much more than that...

Well... we all know that Aragorn is the smartest, coolest, bravest, hottest... member of the fellowship, so that is why he can understand Dwarvish. He is special!!!

LOL! @ LT.

Regarding what Gimli says at Lorien, well, you're not going to have much luck....

Anyway, try here.
