Hobbit Holes
Does anyone wanna live in a hobbit hole? Would that be cool or what? Earth-sheltered design cuts heating and cooling costs by about 60%, safe from storms, hurricanes, tornados, don't have to paint or reshingle or any of that other crap. Doesn't screw up the natural scenery. Barbecue on the roof among the stars. Have Gandalf come to visit. No boxes.
Ah, to be all snuggled up like a hobbit in a hobbit hole -- fire goin, tea in the kettle, good jam, good brews, and all. Last edited by Sirithdal : 12-12-2002 at 01:20 AM. |

When I'm old enough to build a house of my own, I want a hobbit hole. Or a place like Rivendell. Or a mix of the two....? But I for sure want on e of them! A place like Bag End would be sooooooo nice in the winter, or to sit outside on the porch in the summer/spring......sighhhh

I live in the basement of our house. It's cool during the day when everything's hot and humid out and a bit warmer than upstairs during the night.
One thing, though: Take special attention to plumbing and sewage system. we don't want any backflow happening..

Hobbit hole would be too dark. Nope, I'll take one of the more modern Hobbit houses.

I'd love to live in a hobbit hole! It seems like a happy place to live! Especially Bags End.

Hot air rises, so I don't get why your basement should be warmer than the upstairs, unless you have a circulation-ventilation problem and the heat is getting trapped where you are. Normally, an underground shelter should afford protection from the ambient heat outside. If the hobbit dwelling ("holes" suggest "ends of worms", roots and stuff) were under a hill ("Underhill"), you could let in nice breezes to cool and ventilate the spaces. You might even put up a windmill for electricity and mechanical power for pumping water into the abode, thus further cutting or even eliminating electrical costs altogether. The septic system might use leechfields instead of the town sewage system. The question of light can be conquered with plenty of -- well, lights, by god! You could also have a central atrium design to bring in sunlight to all rooms. Grow a few veggies (e.g. mushrooms!) there, too. I WANT ONE!! Last edited by Sirithdal : 12-12-2002 at 12:11 PM. |

i'd prefer to live in a tree house in Lothlorein, but a hobbit hole would suit me! (not too keen on the round doors though...)

A hobbit hole would be great! I've always wanted one. And they are very good for sustainable living. And round doors are the best, especially with the doorknobs in the middle. I might want mine a bit larger, though. I doubt that I would fit very well in a regular-sized hobbt hole.

You guys do realize don't you, that not all Hobbits lived below ground in Hobbit holes?

Ah, when I get my own place, I'm going to get somewhere in the country, either with a hill or build my own, and make a beautiful little hobbit-hole with sky-lights and windows, with a great little vegetable garden and orchard, and a little river through the back of the place. My own Bywater residence...

Peter Jackson actually took the entire bag end set home and is planning to have it installed. He liked the "roundness" of it. (from commentary on extended version of FotR)

IIRC, both the rich AND the poor had a tendency towards hobbit holes. It was the middle ground ones that didn't.
