The Lay of Lethien

In the battle of songs of power between Sauron and Finrod, why does it say at the end: "The captives sad in Angband mourn?" I thought that they were in Tol-In-Gaurhoth FKA Minus Tirith on Tol Sirion.

You are right, but Sauron was just singing of many of the tribulations of the Noldor....the kin-slaying, the crossing of the ice...and the many elves that were imprisoned in Angband after Dagor Bragollach.

I think it's in the 1st book of Lost tales.
But don't take my word for it.
That book is part of a 10 book series thats called the History of MIddle Earth(HoME). If you're a big tolkien fan..its a good idea to read those.(They're slightly complicated with terminology and etc.)

Fancey meeting you here jediguy. I really don't know where you can find the Lay in its intirety, but the part I am refering to is in the Silmarillion. You probably already know that though.

Yeah. The Silmarillion part is only a small part of the Lay. It also gives many hints to how big the Lay is, so I was interested in reading it.

I understand it to be sizeable. I wonder if it is posted on the net anywhere.

Try getting a book called "The Lays of Beleriand". I think the Lay of Leithian is in there. But Tolkien never finished it, He only got as far as when Beren and Luthien left Angband, Beren minus his hand .... but still that is a lot !!

Don't forget that that Lay of Leithian is from the old mythology, before there was a Middle-earth.

There's 12 HoMe books: The Book of Lost Tales 1, The Book of Lost Tales 2, The Lays of Beleriand, The Shaping of Middle-earth, The Lost Road And Other Writings, The Return of the Shadow, The Treason of Isengard, The War of the Ring, Sauron Defeated, Morgoth's Ring, The War of the Jewels and The Peoples of Middle-earth.

Gandalf

Most certainly read the lay of leithian. It is absolutely beautiful-over 4000 lines of epic poetry, but it really is very easy to understand.
