Literary film night

The English Department at school is starting up a literary film night. Every two weeks we get together and watch a movie that is based on a book. This time we watched 'Emma', but we don't want all girly movies...

What are some good books that have transfered well to film?

The Dead -- in my opinion, one of the best adaptations of book to film -- the book's by James Joyce, and an easy read compared to other works e.g. Ulysses...

Gone With The Wind if you have a lot of time on your hands... long movie, but amazing as a film in its own right as well as a visual adaptation of a major period piece.

The Godfather for sure, of course. After reading the book recently, and seeing how the film dealt with the occasional non-linearity of the narrative, I think similar techniques will be used in the editing of The Two Towers and Return of the King... but that's a different subject entirely.

2001: A Space Odyssey is an amazing film (and an amazing book) but neither is an adaptation of the other, as they were written by Arthur C. Clarke concurrently. There are some stark differences, but both are masterpieces of their respective media.

Blade Runner is an adaptation of a short story by Philip K. Dick, and while on the subject of Philip K. Dick short stories, Minority Report (not released on DVD yet) is perhaps the best new film I've seen this year... haven't read the original though.

West Side Story (as a loose modernization of Romeo and Juliet) is quintessential.

The Wizard of Oz is a landmark achievement in film, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a "literary film" focus because it's such a loose adaptation it's practically a "re-imagining".

Pierre Boulle, who wrote Planet of the Apes, also wrote the original The Bridge on the River Kwai.

While speaking of David Lean films, try... well... practically any David Lean film. Lawrence of Arabia is based on Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Doctor Zhivago on the Pasternak novel, and while I haven't seen A Passage to India, I plan to.

I'd recommend The Fellowship of the Ring, of course, but it's probably best to wait until the whole thing is out, not just the first third.
