One-of-a-Kind Friendship?

Frodo and Sam are among the great friendships of literature. What other great friendships are there in literature? Certainly no one in Gone With the Wind would rate. Or the Grapes of Wrath. Anyone in Shakespeare? The Brontes - no, not really. So, who, then? In my opinion, Sam and Frodo had one-of-a-kind friendship.....

I agree that Frodo and Sam shared a very special, unique friendship and off the top of my head I can't think of any parallels in any other literature. You'd probably have to look to books about comrades in the war to find anything which came close.

What they went through together and Sam's extraordinary loyalty helped forge their friendship. They were mutually dependent and helped each other and it was their friendship which ultimately saw them through the test.

Duncan Idaho from the Dune Series, certainly had an unusual loyalty to the Atreides name, which spanned millenia.

Strider unusual friendships

One such friendship that instantly comes to mind is that between David and Jonathan in the Bible. Jonathan was the son of King Saul, whom David was about to replace. They loved each other like brothers despite Saul's hatred of David and many attempts to kill him.
The relationship between Ender Wiggins and the cyber-being Jane also comes to mind.

agh, never read past the second Ender's Game books.

One of the interesting things about Sam and Frodo, though, is that Sam is Frodo's servant. . .

How about Lyra and Will from Phillip Pullmans dark materials?
I can see this tread going down a long and dark road if we keep talking about Sam and Frodo's relationship.....

Mulder and Scully of the X-Files . . . it's not literature, but it's a friendship of that level.

I'd definitely count Will and Lyra.

Tweedledee and Tweedledum?
Beevis and Butthead?

How 'bout Han Solo and Chewbacca?

I would have to disagree about Lyra and Will by the end of the books, because although previous to the end I would agree entirely, by the end they are-er, romantically involved. That's something different-similiar, maybe, but it's on a slightly different level from Frodo and Sam.

I've seen Clones three times and liked it, although not quite as much as Phantom menace.

The SF - Fandom forum has been down for maintenance since Saturday night...isn't it a bummer? The good part is I'm getting to know my fellow Mooters a bit better!

How about Elric and Moonglum from Michael Moorcock's "Stormbringer" novels?

It only seems like it's been down since Saturday, Elda. It actually went down at 7pm CST on Sunday....and was supposed to be back up at 7pm Monday. Personally, my money's on Wednesday.

I don't think I was say that Han and Chewie had the same kind of relationship, even though they were probably just as close. But you didn't ever really see Sam and Frodo yelling at each other...
