For me it was learning that Bilbo was not the main character.

For me, I guess I was expecting to hate the book, because at that time, I disliked the Hobbit. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I liked it - although it took 3 readings before I was completely won over.

Afro-elf, I must compliment you for devising the most thought-provoking threads. It took me a while to think of this, its been so long ago that I read LoTR, but here goes:
(1) Gollum was a mutant frog
(2) Elves were little, looked like the Grinch, and spoke with Austrian accents.
(3) Orcs and Goblins are not the same creature

Learning Biblo's ring was not just a rather fun, if at times trivial, toy. I had wanted the ring until I read the LotR, now I'd rather not have it.

That after TRYING to read lord of the rings several times after finishing the hobbit, that the movie would be bsolute horse poo. Luckily it wasnt and it gave me the will power to read the books.

I also imagined Frodo a heck of a lot different.

Oh, and I thought Hobbits were the size of the borrowers!!!

Gollum

To me Arwen turning up at the end and marrying Aragorn was quite a big surprise.

That hobbits were so mischeivous. Although not nearly as mischeivous as in the movie. That and their almost ncanny attraction to muchrooms, which might explain why they are so short...

I forgot about that! Before LOTR, (and Hobbit, for that matter), my conceptions of an Elf, were akin to those english story pixies by Enid Blyton.

My perception of the elves was greatly changed from my perceptions after reading the "Hobbit".

I was in the seemingly unique position of having never even heard of LoTR before I read it! So I benifited from having no preconceptions.

The first time through the Fellowship, I was thinking Boromir was a dwarf.

Yeah, that was a big one for me too. I was like 'What the?...Where did she come from?' It took me a couple times through before I caught all the little Arwen-references in Lorien and such. Then I read the appendices.

I have a problem with the maps. It's fine when I'm looking at them in the books, but when I pretend that I'm in Middle-Earth, I always picture Mordor to the west for some reason. And Gollum still kinda looks like a mutant frog in my imagination.

I didn't really understand the course of the Anduin, even though I had the maps. I also thought Edoras was in the Misty Mountains between Fangorn and Lorien the first time I read it.

After hearing the grown-ups talk about Middle-Earth during my childhood (yeah, I was young once) and before reading the books, I thought ME was the inner side of a hollow Earth and the inner core was it's sun. I think I got this idea because of the name itself.
