I have a question
Hello everyone. I am new to JRR Tolkien, though I am almost done with The Lord of the Rings. I was wondering, what is The Silmarillion?

I will assume this is no joke
But seriously the Silmarillion is the history of the fisrt age of middle earth. It describes the creation Ea and Arda, the creation of elves, dwarfes and men. It then summerises how the branches of the elves-Noldor, Sindar and Avari were formed. It describes the creation of the Silmarils that give the epic its titles. The destruction of the two trees by Morgoth and the fruitless war of the Noldor against Morgoth in Beleriand. Included are the tales of Beren and Luthien (mentioned in the poem in FOTR), the tale of Turin, the tale of Earendil, a summary of the history of Numenenor in the Akallebeth and a summary of LOTR. An epic tragedy is it far more difficult to read and much more rewarding. Not all of it is canonical, most notably the chapter on the downfall of doriath.

Well it's better then say the history of dwarven botany, studying the monumental architecture of hobbits or racing rohirrim for money.

An intelligent joke! Bravo! It took me two readings to catch it, but I caught it.

Well, since this is one of those nonsense threads leftover from the first, I guess I will close it.
