Brooks' mode of writing

I found Brooks' mode of writing somewhat difficult at times, for example, when the heroes are going to die. For sure they ARE GOING TO DIE. BY JOVE THEY ARE GOING TO DIE. Of course they didn't. A bit exasperating. That's the main difference between Brooks and Tolkien. Or what do the rest of you think?
