Gandalf and Moria

I am reading Unfinished Tales, specifically the chapter on the Istari. They showed up in Middle-earth ~ year 1000 of the Third age (TA). It says that not much was recorded about Gandalf in the second millenium of the TA. Moria was destroyed in ~1980 of the TA.
I always thought that Gandalf had been through Moria in its heyday, because of what he says in the FotR at the 3 exits - 'I have no memory of this'. I thought he was perplexed that he couldn't remember the way out.
Could someone clear this up for me? As well, did the balrog destroy Moria along with the goblins, or where there separate battles?

What exactly do you need clearing up about?

As for the Fall of Mória, the Tale of Years makes it seem like a gradual thing. First the Balrog slew Durin VI and some other Dwarves, but I seem to recall it being a few years before the Dwarves fled completely. Sauron sent Orcs over there during that time. I guess it was a combination of Balrog and Goblins.

I want to know how Gandalf knew the way through Moria. Was there any previous references to him travelling there or would he have been told the way by someone else?

He tells the Fellowship before they enter that he had been through, though he went from the East side to the West side, not vice-versa. I'm not certain whether or not he went during the reign of Durin or not. You can probably find the quote in the chapter called The Ring Goes South in Book II.

I think he tells that it was in search for Thrain II that he crossed Moria from East to West. If that is true, than it was when Moria was long desserted by the dwarves and nearly emptied of Orcs by thied war wis the dwarves.
