Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way

And whither then? I cannot say.

Only three, myself. I know if I start that I have to read them all the way through to the exclusion of anyting else. Every read is better (so far) because of the depth and detail of the work. There are so many threads that you may tend to overlook something. On the first read I was so into the action and plot I missed a good deal of the myth and setting details. When you finish you shoukd give the Silmarillion a go and the re-read the LotR. The links are great to find. Enjoy!

Seven times! It gets better each time! Everytime you re-read it, new detail springs forth, where last time it might have passed you by. I always enjoy reading the Moria sequences, which are damned scary. Also. love it when the fellowship breaks, and Frodo and Sam go off down the river by themselves... and of coure, I love all the battle scenes, the competition betweeen Legolas, and Gimli, and the Pippin & Merry scenes with the Ents!

The first time around, when I first read it (aged 14) there were bits that bored me. The second time around (when I knew where the story was going) was infinately easier to read, and now, that I have finished my 7th go, I find myself even reading the songs, and poems! Eight years after first reading LOTR, now I'm beginning to read the Sil. It comes in a Full Circle.

Two times, within 4 months. I just finished it again for the second time today! I had been putting off the last chapter for a while, but now I'm going to start (re-start, rather) The Silmarillion.

Oh, and I've also listened to the BBC production once all the way through. Does that count?

I think it is three times, but I am working on a forth. I have read the Sil twice, and the Hobbit 6 times at least. Each time I find plenty of new things. Maybe it is because my memory isn't too good.

I know what you mean, Twilight, every time I re-read the books I learn something new! Probably because I have forgotten them from last time ...

However, I have still yet to read the Sil, it's been quite hard work for me... (this from the person who has managed to read the entire Dune series...). Do you have any tips on how to make the reading easier?

I've read it three times, but I'm reading the Sillmarillion now and I plan to re-read LOTR when I finish....after reading The Sil I'll probably appriciate it more.

I don't count... I don't always read it over from the very beginning, you know, I'll just reread a scene and keep on going or something.

I've only read the entire thing straight through three times (I'm starting it again as soon as my stupid older brother gives me FOTR back!) But, I've read my favorite sections about one hundred times.

I've read LOTR almost every year from 1979 until 2000 and found it just as fascinating every time. Have read The Silmarillion twice. The Hobbit once.
