Artist's Inquiry

I have the opportunity to draw some Middle-Earth scenes to be engraved by laser into a piece of wood... they're pretty cool, if you've ever seen them. For now, I'm tracing some pictures for this guy that engraves them, but once I'm finished with that I can do any I wish. I've already decided on a few titles and scenes from Middle-Earth that I love:

"Bard's Black Arrow" - where Bard is about to fell Smaug

"Aure Entuluva!" - Hurin's final battle; day shall come again

"The Fall of Fingolfin" - Fingolfin challenges Melkor

I already have what I'd like them to look like and such, but I want to do more. Any suggestions? I'd like to do one with Gandalf, but I haven't thought of anything I'm content with yet.

How about Gandalf finding Thrain in the dungeons of Dol Guldur.

Or Gandalf in front of the Balrog, "You shall not pass!" of Gandalf in front of the Moria gate. . .
Or the White Rider. . .
er, I haven't read The Hobbit yet.
But, the wood engravings sound really cool!

This one's not about Gandalf but how about Merry sneaking up on the Morgul King while it gloats over Eowyn.

Good suggestions... I'm designing what I want them to look like now... Morgoth's gonna be tough. I'll probably pull a P.J. balrog.

Merry and Pip as Gandalf and co. find them in chapter eight:TTT.

Bill, Burt, and Tom arguing over how to cook 13 dwarves and a hobbit.

Sam sees an oliphant

I like the second and fourth. I think the oliphaunt one is a little overdone by artists.

yeah, I was just flipping through the book, and looking for descriptive passages (eg Gandalf's face when he recognizes Frodo's possessions). You're probably right about the oliphaunt, though. It's just one of those bright moments in an otherwise tense and darkening story, so it stands out a bit more.

Is there anyway we'll get to see some of these ideas as finished products? You know that all things Tolkien (especially those created by mooters) are of interest to us.

Gil-galad in Mordor (when he's still alive!) and Elrond as his standard bearer. .
Okay, it's not Gandalf, but. . .

I'll indubitably take pictures when they're finished.

My brother's friend has very little artistic talent and asked us to trace some things for him. Wild life stuff. Bears and moose and others. After I finish those, I can do any I like. I should be drawing them up soon.
