What was scariest?

Am curious to know which part of the movie people were the most startled at and which places in the movie they found the audience responding the most?

Each time in the theatres I went to, it was the scene in Rivendell where Bilbo does his "the ring is mine" morph that people in the audience were the most startled and reacted. The rest of the time there was entire quiet - the audience being quite rapt in the experience.

Did anyone else find this too?

yup. most of the time people who are really interested in the movie and not just hanging out in the theatre will be intently listening to all the lines.

it gets really emotional in that scene in rivendell then <bug eye> hiss...screech!

I jumped the first time I watched that scene then spent the next 5 viewings looking at the other people.

That freaked me out too, especially the first time I saw it. But the Balrog was scary too, and the drums in the deep.

I still think the ringwraith right before the flight to the ford. The way he just screams...wow. I shiver every single time.

I wasn't (unfortunately) scared anywhere in the film...
Parts that were in the book, I knew already (though some of my friends weren't and they nearly screamed when nazgul whack the beds with their swords ), and rest I had guessed (that Bilbo snarl scared half of the audience, but I unfortunately had guessed few seconds earlier how it's going to be done (why do I have to be so smart?! ).
I'd say, that the Weathertop-scene was scariest...Until Aragorn jumps in and saves the day (or night). That could had been done in better way.

Still, I say, that the movie was great. I'm eager to see the other two...

Yeah there were many parts which freaked me out. Including the ringwraiths! Bilbo's morph was the most unexpected though!
The score really helped the whole experience. PJ et al. did I grand job!

The people in the theatre seemed to be scared most by the Bilbo gone freaky scene. However I was more drawn in by the Ringwraiths. Just imagine bumping into those guys on a dark lonely road.

Actually, the most unexpected moment was when The Eye of Sauron was Spliced with shots of the ring when Gandalf tried to pick it up in Bag-End, I never expected that, Bilbo's "Gollum" moment however, I did expect that due to the Dialogue beforehand.

It is strange, the Bilbo Temptation in Rivendell is featured both in the BBC Radio Dramatisation and the Movie, but not in the Novel.

Gandalf Most Startling spot in the Film,

For me the two points where I was suprised/startled were 1) when the Riders chased the hobbits in the shire on the way to the ferry and a Rider suddenly appeared in the screen when I did not expect him to appear and 2) the Morph of Biblo at Rivendell.

I expected something between Frodo and Bilbo, but not that.

On a side note from the movie:
Because they did not indicate the passage of 16-17 years from Bilbo's farrewell party to the flight of Frodo to Rivendell, when you see Bilbo in Rivendell it seems that Bilbo used some Clairol to change his hair color.

Sincerely,
Anthony

Actually, CBGuy, it WAS in the novel, in the chapter "Many Meetings." The book's portrayal was different from the film's, because Tolkien wrote the transformation from FRODO'S point of view. After Bilbo asked to see the ring, the book reads "Slowly, [Frodo]drew it out. Bilbo put out his hand. But Frodo quickly drew back the Ring. To his distress and amazement, he found that he was no longer looking at Bilbo; a shadow seemed to have fallen between them, and through it he found himself eyeing a little wrinkled creature with a hungry face and bony groping hands. He felt a desire to strike him." The movie changed the logisitics of the scene, somewhat, but it was in there.

I was sitting next to some woman in the theater and the moment Bilbo did his little 'morphing' scene, the woman jumped in her seat and screamed, "JESUS!" She yelled it so unexpectedly that I was more shook by her than by Bilbo. I practically fell outta my seat.

A couple of girls in the back of he theater screamed when Gandalf fell. That was pretty unexpecting. The girls screaming, I mean.

I had one of those ladies too! I hadn't read the book yet, so it was COMPLETELY unexpected. I jumped in my seat, but my dad laughed. He laughed (quietly) during a lot of stuff like that.

Without a doubt, for startling bits would be the Lidless Eye when Gandalf touches the Ring, the Nazgul jumping the hobbits, and Bilbo's transformation...

But for scariness, any part with Sauron, be he Lidless Eye or Dark Lord, and the Nazgul.

Bilbo gave me a great shock, with his sudden changing in to this orc-like thing and lunging at Frodo. Although I had read the books before, Galadriel's speech before her "I passed the test" line also freaked me out, with her turning into this green, ghastly thing and all that.
