Namarie

Does anybody out there know the meaning of namarie? I've heard that it means my love, I've heard that it means I love you, and I've heard some other things as well . . . does anybody know?
By the way, sorry that I can't get the two little dots over the e . . .

Namarie

I wondered about this as well. In the bit in LOTR were the fellowship are in Lorien, someone (can't remember who) sings a song in Elvish about Elbereth and I think Namarie is another name for her. Although I'm not completely sure.
It's a lovely word though.

Namárië means 'Farewell' as Taurwen said. It's translated in Farewell to Lórien: Namárië! Nai hiruvalyë Valimar! Nai elyë hiruva! Namárië! is translated: Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar! Maybe even thou shalt find it! Farewell!.

In Words, Phrases and Passages (published in Parma Eldalamberon 17) namárie is said to mean 'let all that is good be (to you)' and was a Quenya expression for 'farewell'.

And under the root MAN 'good' Tolkien notes márie 'goodness', and namárie (á na márie) literally 'be well, a formula of greeting or farewell.'

If I'm reading it right, then the word can be used in greeting too! if so, this would be a great example of how difficult it can be to guess at the finer details of the Elvish tongues.

Feanor's last words were, "I'm going to prove I am right if it kills every one of you."

Video of Tolkien reciting “Namárië”

…and the Ring Verse

…and discussing the Lord of the Rings.
