melian

in the SIL on page 57 it says that melian was a MAIA, of the race of the VALAR

but maia and valar were both aunir (SP?)

any thoughts on this?

She was kown as dernhelm because of her exclaimation when she realized that the rider's headgear was heavy and obscured her sight.

I believe that she was of the Maiar of the Vala Yavanna. Yes, they are both Ainur, but, the Maiar are of lesser power then the Valar, and are their servants.

She was actually of Vána and Estë, though one passage would seem to place her among the people of Irmo (Lórien). She was of the kin of Yavanna (and thus Vána also).

you should probobly read it; Melian was of the same race as the Valar.

Now, moving on to more important questions:

How did beren get into melians girdle?
Did she, or did she not die in the sack?

My gosh... I thought you were actually referring to a girdle, as in the elasticized wear of the twelfth century. I read that sentence about five times before I remembered what it really meant. Before I realized that, I just thought you were a dirty, dirty little man.

Well, it would have been more clear if you had said "How did Beren get through Melian's girdle?" But I'm not really dirty... I promise.
