Sauron

Was Sauron one of the Istari? I kind remember Gandalf saying that somewhere. It might have been in The Hobbit.

Maybe you are confusing Sauron with Saruman. Both were of the Maiar, but Sauron was much more powerful. Saruman was of the Istari.

No, I'm pretty sure that Gandalf called Sauron a wizard 'of his order' or something like that. It was somewhere in The Hobbit.

But IIRC Sauron was never mentioned in The Hobbit.

He was the same basic type of being, though.

Sauron was mentioned a few times in The Hobbit though. They called him the Necromancer.
P.s. Were all allowed one stupid question, right?

As long as you don't mention wings, green orcs, or faramir's death.

I have a knife, so if you want pointy ears, that's no problem.

Gandalf

The Istari were a specific sect of maiar sent to middle earth.
So yes sauron is a maiar. And no he is not an istari
,But quite obviously he was either created far superior to the other known maiar or he through some perverse wizardry has made himself more powerful.

I think in the silmarillion towards the beginning it mentions the maiar and describes them and lists sauron as one of them not long after. But somewhere towards the end of the book it talks about the istari. But I cant recollect any references from gandalf about his race or order

Wayfarer was making fun of me while living up to his title, that nefarious dog. There is a horde of infamous ideas, theories, comments and questions of mine behind me, and Wayfarer remembers most of them.

I thought the Necromancer was Saruman.

Nuts!

It's time to read the book again!

Actually Saruman was still "good" in that time (or it was taught he was) and his powers were needed in driving Sauron from Dol Guldur where he had been playing the part of the Necromancer.
Sauron definately wasn't one of the Istari. Actually Istari were sent to Middle Earth to be counter-force of Sauron.
Sauron was maia, that had pretty good part in Silmarillion as well, as servant of Morgoth.
