Re: Clan of the cave bear series

I read these books when they first came out. At first I liked them but after awhile it became rather tiresome that the female protagonist always seemed to be the one who invented things. It almost seemed like a joke -- the way back during the cold war, the soviets always claimed they were the first to invent/do things.

You're probably right about that. It's been a long time since I read the books. I just remember that the more I read, I kept getting more irritated with the way inventions came about. I really enjoyed the first book but for me, the series just went downhill.

I understand the 5th book is still in the works, so don't despair. Of course, thats' been rumored fo 5 years at least, so don't hold your breath waiting *just* yet.

I liked them in the beginning, especially the descriptions of daily life, work, tools and knowledge. Later on they seemed to deteriorate into a Neolithic Harlequin romance series and I got bored with it. Also after awhile, Ayla got to be just too wonderful for my taste and Jondalar seemed to most need a spanking for being a spoiled lil' boy. I thought the book series was a good idea that just went wrong along the way

I'm dredging I know, but I had to comment on this

Has anyone read this book? I found it to be very interesting. It's about the way of life for the Neanderthal and Cro Magnon. It gives one an idea of what the cultures and beliefs early beings might have had on this planet. Of course it is fiction, but it also had a very good, exciting story to it.
The second book is good as well called The Valley of Horses.

It makes the anthropologist in me want to scream. As someone said earlier, the female protagonist just happens to invent everything, and information is hopelessly out of date, not to mention grossly inaccurate in some places.

It's not dredging if it's something you actually want to discuss -- just if you pull one to the top for no good reason.

I saw the movie and liked it (although I think it was critically panned), but I haven't read the book (although I plan to at some point).

Thanks Azalea

I haven't seen the movie, but I'd bet on the book being better, just because books usually are.

I thought it was pretty boring, but I heard many people like it. I loved the first two books, but the third and fourth were not very good. But that's just my opinion. If you like the other books I would recommend you read it, if only to find out what happens.
