The Merry Christmas and Happy New Year thread

Figured I start this now.

So, everybody done their Christmas shopping? Picked the menus yet?

Or for those in similar cases like me, how many times have you had to pull the cat out of the Christmas tree yet?

We don't have a tree
BUT: I decided what we're going to eat on boxing day, I'm doing the cooking.

Alas, no Christmas tree. But I've been treating myself to
Christmas songs, hymns and carols,
Christmas food, drinks and pastries,
Christmas films, novels and short stories.

The holiday gift hunt is all but complete and the prospects for a dazzling white Christmas couldn't be more promising.

We haven't put it up this year. Last year the cat kept dangling out of it, and this year we've got Fred as well, so the tree is DOOMED.

I'm boycotting Christmas; I've been listening to "Baby it's Cold Outside", and watching that Annie Lennox "God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen" video I posted, but that's pretty much it.

But Gwaaaaaaaai!! Why would you boycott Christmas? It's the most wonderful time of the year!!!!!!!! I love Christmas.... mind you my love of it has been slightly dampened by my ba-humbugin' family.... but regardless, I love it!

I'm actually really lucky... my best friend evah is also an enormous Christmas person. So she and I keep each ourselves excited about Christmas by constantly calling and updating each other on what we're up to that's Christmassy.

Because Christmas is the high holy day of Consumerist religion more than anything else, that's why. And Christmas presents are the votive offerings!

Which might be a way of saying I can't afford Christmas, so those grapes must be sour . . . >.>

Our tree's a fake, but that doesn't stop the cats from investigating. Although maybe, I suspect I shouldn't have let my mum use that pine-scent spray either...

Phew, almost all the preparitions done. With all the running around in the snow, double shifts and acquiring a cold/possible throat infection, I think I might just end up sleeping through Christmas altogether.

At first I thought you were going to say because historically, Christ's birthday is more likely to have been in spring than in December. Sooo... I take it you'll be saying no to that lovely virtual cup of tea with fresh cookies I was about to offer you then too?

Occasionally I will gladly submit to Consumerism. It makes a good companion to the Christmas spirit. Like today, for instance

I printed a short story - A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote - which I then read on the underground train to town this morning.

There I gave in to a last minute shopping frenzy, to eke out what little presents I had. It was quite cold outdoors, but I had my new incredibly warm winter jacket with me
When I had had enough of gift hunting, I visited my mother, shared some warm mulled wine with her and wrapped the presents up.

Then I went home, finishing the last of Capote's story on the train. Had some tasty pie that I made yesterday. And in about ten minutes I'm going to watch the movie Christmas with the Kranks on tv, all snuggled up on the couch

First Christmas married. I'm guessing you don't REALLY have to start picking who you'll see and who you won't till after you have kids - unless one of them lives three states away...

But we'll be here, there and back over Christmas Eve and Christmas. It's great because it feels like Christmas is already past, and every time I remember it hasn't yet, I get really happy.

Not sure if I'll be here for the next two days, so in case I'm not: Merry Christmas to you all! Enjoy this time of thought and togetherness.
