Sherlock

Has anyone watched the latest Sherlock Holmes BBC series? Made by the guy who now runs Doctor Who and has soon-hobbit-to-be Martin Freeman as Watson?

It's a modern update, putting Holmes and Watson in a current-day setting. Usually I don't like that, but I have to admit, it works rather well here. There are very close parallells to the books and it's fun to pick out all the references to the books. Benedict Cumberbatch makes for a good Holmes both visually and in acting.

i've seen the first 2 episodes.. and i really like it. steven moffat is brilliant; the doctor who episodes he made are my favourites, and he's done a really good job with sherlock as well. the effects they use to communicate sherlock's thoughts or happenings that you normally can't see are really good as well; they could be so, so cheesy and silly, but they're not.

benedict cumberbatch (gotta love that name) does a brilliant job, and really suits the role well.. he has such an interesting face as well. o.O

martin freeman does a really good job as well, and i can certainly see a bilbo in him..

I just watched the first one; GREAT fun! SO much better than the vast majority of crime shows, the genius of Moffat strikes again. You're right, Nerd, Benedict Cumberbatch is A) an AWESOME name, and B) a great fit and a magnetic performer. First time I've actually seen Martin Freeman in anything, but it definitely makes me hopeful for the Hobbit. And yes, Earn, the update works very well, indeed.

This is the first 90 minute show I recall coming across; are there other ones out there?

In that line I quite like the way they put the text of text messages or things they look up on the internet right on the screen. It's a novel approach. Moffat knows his stuff, that's for sure.

In the third episode there's a scene where he jumps on a giant's back in a fight. I kept thinking: "He'll be doing that in a year's time as well, only with a wig and hairy feet!"

Three episodes of 90 minutes at least. I suspect that's the full season. But there has to be a new season next year! Because the third episode ends in a cliff hanger!

If you liked Jekyll, Nerdy, I believe the main character has been signed up as one of the 13 Dwarves for The Hobbit as well.

There's more than just a giant involved, I can promise that. Rather exciting episode, the last one.

Oh sorry, I think I misunderstood the first time around. 90 minutes is not that unusual for some of the British crime/mystery TV series. I can name several of the top of my head.

Just finished it. That was quite an understatement.

hmm. i just watched the third episode, and to be honest, i didn't think the ending was a very good cliff-hanger.. if it had ended like 15 minutes earlier, it would've been; but the way it ended now it's not very difficult to guess what's going to (or not going to) happen.

that is, if it had ended when watson stepped in, before you could see the bomb on him.. i doubt that the arch villain will die 15 minutes after you first meet him.

otherwise, the episode was good. to me, these three episodes were a bit like the lotr-movies: the first one was the best one, the second the worst one and the third somewhere in between.

Finished it. I absolutely love it. I'm pretty sure I can say it's the best thing on television, at least Anglophonic television.

Brilliant TV. On the plus side: probably the best TV I'll see in 2012. On the minus side - it's not even February yet.

I'm predicting this will be a MASSIVE year for Martin Freeman.

I saw the episode The Blind Banker. It was well done in my opinion. Although I am partial to the Granada version with Jeremy Brett, I think they writers did very good in modernizing Sherlock Holmes.

I will need to see more episodes to have a more informed opinion.

Most people (myself included) seem to think that The Blind Banker is the least good of all six episodes so far made, so I'd be interested in your opinion of how the others seem, having watched that first.

I also found Blind Baker to be the weakest ep.

When I finished the second series, I officially designated Sherlock "The Best Thing On TV."

I have the latest version on my DVR. I will need to watch it. I am not sure which episode I recorded, but will see soon enough.

I just wish I could rent this series' past 2 seasons on DVD at my local videorenty-place, but I'm in south bay LA and it's not so easy to track down recently-aired BBC series around here. Not so easy at ALL.

But didn't Steve Thompson raise his game for The Reichenbach Fall?

Good luck Lotesse, it will be worth the effort!
