Anyone remember Usenet/Newsgroups?

I'm probably dating myself with this question - yeah, I'm middle-aged - but anyone remember Usenet/Newsgroups? They were where folks like us hung out when the Internet was young and before.

I remember them vaguely. Like back in 1996 when I first got internet access.

Yes! I remember them from the early 1990s when I was a part-time student of computer programming. I used to read alt.tolkien (there was more to that address, but I've forgotten). We discussed who would be suitable for the parts if anyone would ever be crazy enough to film The Lord of the Rings. It couldn't be done, of course, but it was funny to imagine. And therefore we needn't restrict ourselves to actually available actors either.

I seem to remember that Sean Connery was suggested for Gandalf and Kenneth Branagh was suggested for Faramir.

I remember 'em.

I am struck by the fact that much of what they now call "web 2.0" is, er, kinda like usenet/nntp with a swanky interface.

I also remember when I had one server that could run web services, email, FTP, network and file system for two OSes, backup and printer sharing for an entire department without breaking into a sweat.

Ha I remember the pre world wide web days when you used your 12 baud modem to dial into Bulletin Board systems and peruse a strictly text based online world. Now that was when being online was REALLY an underground subculture not what everyone does like it is today. And all you damn whipper snappers and your America Online and your youtube and your web cell phones and your myspace ruined it all! *waves cane feebly*
