Flowers and more

If we can have a frog thread and the sorts, we can also have a thread on flowers.
Feel free to post pics of your favourite flowers, to talk about them, or just post some gardening tips or something.

I'm a complete flowerfreak, especially wild flowers with bright colours.
Apparently when I was little I would pull out the weeds with little flowers in it and nurture them in my little part of the garden. There is also a story floating around about me stealing and burying the pride of my neighbour in the hopes that I would get such a pretty flower in my garden too, but I plead ignorance.

My all time favourite flower is an orange rose with a red or yellow shine.

I also like gerbera's because of their bright and happy colours:

The bright colours of Corn flowers and poppy's never cease to amaze me:

And last but not least, the sunflower:

In Japan, my friends gave me the nickname Himawari which literally means "turning to the sun" and it is the Japanese word for sunflower. I really treasure this nickname and came to like the sunflower very much.

Here's a nice site on flowers, how to keep them, which flowers to give when and the meaning of different flowers and their backgrounds.

Roses, corn flowers, poppies and sun flowers...

You're Dutch. How do you feel about tulips?

Or cherry blossoms?

My favourite flowers are white roses, roses with a different colour on their tip, lilies, and (probably my all-around favourite) jasmine.

Tulips are okay I guess, depending on the colour. I love seeing the fields with flowers though. In a few weeks time they will be blooming again

Gwaimir, some nice pics for you of cherry blossoms I took in Japan ^_^

I'm not normally into girly flower-y things, but I gotta say, thanks for posting this thread up - it really lifted my mood.

I'm an a sunflower girl. My one concession.

I didn't dare admitting my love for flowers until I went to Japan. But that is a different thing.
A special pic for you then, one of my favourites:

Because the pic keeps disappearing...

Flowers are good.

I have a soft spot for blue flowers, like corn flowers or gentians, . It's a pity that I never seem to be able to find any large dark blue flowers, they're always small.

Lignum vitae

This is actually the national tree of jamaica and I have always been enamored by it. The beautiful flowers of which are pictured above.

Lignum vitae is the heartwood of species of the genus Guaiacum, the trees of which are also called guayacan. The name is Latin for "wood of life", and derives from its medicinal uses.

This wood has a density between 1.28 and 1.37g per cu.cm., so it will sink in water. It is a hard, dense and durable wood, the most dense of any known wood. Originating in the West Indies and from southern Mexico to Venezuela. Used for ship propeller shaft and wagon wheel bearings and bushings. Heartwood is olive brown to nearly black, growing darker upon prolonged exposure to air. Difficult to work, but turns well and polishes to a fine, naturally waxy finish. Does not glue well and rejects most applied finishes. (wikipedia and here)

Lovely topic by the way.

Very nice pics Thanks!

This is my favourite herb. Can anyone guess what it is?
It is mostly used in Italian and Greek cooking and I use it in almost all my dishes. You can use it to flavour up your meat (should you eat any) or tomato sauce. It is not very good in salads or dressings, but in other sauces it is often quite good. You'll have a hard time finding pizzas or macaroni without this herb.

Nope. It's oregano, but you were all very close.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregano

You up for another one?
This one can be found all over the world, but most varieties come from China. The flower is edible, but the berries it produces aren't and it smells really nice. It is a member of the "catnip"family. Hummingbirds like this flower for the nectar is very sweet.
You can grow it on half sunny places and it likes to climb, so it's best to plant near a wall. However the varieties growing in the USA and New Zealand are rather... hard to kill and considered to be weeds.

(There are many different varieties, so this picture may not show you the variety you are used to.)

*looks up the Dutch for Morning glory* Nope, though they are very pretty too. We always have them in the summer. Best not to eat this one though, it might not be safe (though it is used in Japanese food).

(Nice meeting you by the way )
