Steve Irwin...

I'm sure you've all heard of the Croc Hunter...I think it's sad that this happened.

Read this this morning. Very sad indeed, though I suppose not entirely unexpected, given is inimitable style.

"Crikey, this one's cranky..."

Feel for his young family.

EDIt: just reading your link, C, and noted the contribution of that well-known social commentator "Caligirlwithcroctattoos". A Pepys de nos jour surely?

Yes, it definitely is very sad. I feel very sorry for his wife, too. They were very close.

It's strange that he died in this way, to me. Steve Irving has been handling creatures far more dangerous than stingrays for a long time.

Indeed, his passion for his work was evident in everything he did.

A loss that cannot be measured.

Well i come from new zealand and i was a fan of steves work to,
the best thing though was how he went to extreme lengths to save the wild life he even tried to stop poachers when he could i think the loss of steve was a great tragerdy and that it was just so unlikly to be killed by a stingray in so shallow water he new the risks and he was the best of the best its just hard to understand hes dead

I don't think the way he died was very surprising. Yes, he's been handling a lot of extremely dangerous creatures, animals he probably had studied for a long time and knew how to handle (though no one can ever know exactly how they behave). He knew they were dangerous, but also knew what to do to minimize the risks.
I'm not sure if he expected the stingrays to be very dangerous.. Poisonous, yes, but seldom lethally so. On top of that, he was in an element where humans aren't at home. Being stung in the heart.. Well, the risk is tiny, but it's there (obviously).

So many kids have been introduced to animals and nature through Steve.. To be one of those who make people interested in nature is a great accomplishment.

It's really a hell of a surprise. I think there have been, what, three recorded sting-ray fatalities in Australian history?

I read somewhere (sorry, can't remember where) that before this, the number was two.

tho' perhaps better than a parent losing a child before their time???

(mind, guess it depends how old the child was (that lost a parent i mean)

I think the thing that strikes a universal chord across the globe here, is that the guy was truly alive, and sadly, but in truth, the manner of his death - in an odd way it validated all that he had previously done.

best to his family and children, BB

I head about this from my mom. We always liked Steve Irwen. We affecionitly(sp) called him the "Crazy Crocidile Guy" It's sad that we lost someone so passionate about life and wildlife and was fun to watch. I always thought his demise would be a croc...But sting rays are quite dangerous, although I never thought they could be fatal.

Terri and the kids are in my thoughts and prayers

yes indeed the likelyness of being stabbed let alone being stabbed in the heart is extremly unlikely we will remember him always as over here in n.z one of our aquriams is starting a program to carry on steves legacy.
