Frogs

Well, I suppose most people could have guessed I'd make a thread like this some day. But this article: Frog action plan to cost millions provided me with a good set-up.

Frogs are common on all populated continents, no mean feat. They're a very versatile sort of animal. Beside your common garden pool, they can be found from desert to thundra to rainforest.

Personally I am very fond of frogs and even did my last year's final report on their world-wide decline. So this is something I try to keep up with. And I'm rooting for any programme that wants to preserve frog-species. Not only because, as the article states, frogs are a warning system to environmental changes, but also because they are valuable for medical research (and yes, also ust because I love them bulgy-eyed buggers!).

Feel free to discuss.

Well, I'm not even supposed to still be online (WHAT a moot addict I am ) but I can't resist this thread because I LOVE FROGS so very, very much! I love frogs. Anyway...

Tens of millions of dollars a year is a drop in the bucket when one looks at how much friggin' government money is funneled into weapons research, wars, bomb-building, and other stuff like that. I'd happily pay more taxes to save frogs rather than to build bombs. Meh.

Interesting timing for this thread - I just read something last night about frogs! In my son's science book, it described how the Navajo (IIRC) Indians here in the US dissect sheep instead of frogs (usually frogs are dissected in high school biology class) because sheep are considered food animals and frogs aren't, and they would have to do some type of ceremony to restore balance if they killed a frog. And when they're done with the sheep, they make stew, etc. with it.

I'll look it up when he gets home.

What types of things do frogs provide to the environment? I don't know much about them.

That's cool, Rian. Not strictly related, being about toads, but in the bulging file labelled "Brits, Quirky" you will find the following road sign:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/reallywi...ght_toads2.jpg

Coz at certain times of year the toads all get the horn and dive across the road to get it on in a mass orgy in their favourite pond.

That's an interesting tid-bit about the Navajo's, RÃ*an. Thanks for sharing.

What exactly do you mean by 'provide'? In many cases they're prey animal for birds, bats, hedgehogs, and in some cases bigger frogs and other small predators. And frogs in turn prey on insects and small water-life. They're also a good indicator of healthy, clean water pools.

Heheh, I've seen such a sign before! It is also posted here at roads where there are 'frog and toad crossings' organised. Back here it is usually around February, March when nature organisations dig in buckets next to busy roads. Each night they then collect all the amphibians that are fallen into the buckets, do an inventory and transport all the animals to the other side of the road.

Heh. Meantime they've lost the urge.

They are cool, they can breathe through their skins. When I was a kid my dad dug a pond in the garden which I put frog spawn in. I loved watching them hatch out, grow legs and turn into frogs. Years (20+) later, there was still a big colony which kept all the slugs down in the gardens all around. Then my parents sold the house and the new owner filled in the pond because she hated frogs.

An incredibly tiny tree frog from Australia...
http://rainforest-australia.com/pics...20frog%202.JPG

...but not as tiny as the one from Madagascar...

and this adorable, delicate little guy with a tremendously funny name - Boophis viridis frog, at Andasibe Madagascar

They were pics, but I put them back as links so Earniel doesn't kill me for filling her thread up with too many pics...

Look at this really neat looking frog! This is small enough to be just one pic, maybe... Plus he's so interesting, and so cute.

M-mn went the little green frog one day,
M-mn went the little green frog,
M-mn went the little green frog one day,
And they all went M-mn-Ah!

But we all know frogs go (clap) ladidadida,
(clap) ladidadida,
(clap) ladidadida,
We all know frogs go (clap) ladidadida,
They don't go M-mn-Ah!

Beep-beep went the big green truck one day,
Squish-squash went the little green frog,
And the little green frog didn't go M-mn,
'Cause he couldn't go M-mn-Ah!

Sad, but fun! On "M" close your eyes, on "mn" stick out your tongue, and on "Ah!" open both your eyes and mouth very wide (still sticking out your tongue). On "ladidadida" wave your hands in the air in alternating directions. On "Beep-beep" mime honking a horn, and on "Squish-squash" make violent squishing motions.

Shah - Oh, YES, please do! Take pics, that is! I do love pics of animals. Earniel, would Hawaiian frogs be poisonous? I'm wondering...

I wouldn't know so I did a little search and apparently they have the cane toad (buffo marinus) over there which is rather poisonous. I also saw a coqui-frog mentioned and in my mind I always connect those to poison arrow frogs, but I couldn't verify so I could be wrong in that one.

But according to my info the Hawaiian frogs are especially loud.

Am looking forward to the picures, sane. I'll try and scan some of mine as well.
