Mine is from the Elvish name generator at the Barrow downs. But they have updated it now, so my real name no longer returns "Nurvingiel". Needless to say, the name isn't real Elvish. But I like it. It has good nicknames.

(Though... the old thread being closed doesn't bode well for this one...)

Well, since it's been almost two years since the last thread about his had a post, I'll let this one go as long as no one dredges up the other one.

Nothing wrong with linking to the old one. It's done all the time. There are a lot of new users and they can't post in the old one - however they can read about old members such as myself and see how we got our names. However this allows the new users to tell us about their names. I don't think that this thread should be closed.

So here is the old thread with the old users - Origin of a Name (User Name)

Here is my post from there which is number 11 on the first page -

Quote:
My user name comes from a New Jersey legend dating back from the early 1700's. Supposedly in 1735 a woman - Mrs. Leeds of Smithville was having a 13th child. She was tired of having children and cursed it during childbirth and said "I wish it was the devil" At which point when the child was born it sprouted wings - killed several people in the birthing room and flew out the window. Ever since it has terrorized and been seen thourghout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. There are of course several variations on the legend - but that its the most common one.

The devil stilll resides in New Jersey within the forests of the Pine Barrens that cover nearly 1/3 of New Jersey. We used to tell horror stories about the Jersey Devil on the school bus - so I decided to use it as my user name. Also because I love New Jersey.

That, by the way, in case peope don't know - is why our professional hockey team is called the New Jersey Devils. It has nothing to do with the satanic variety - although I am waiting for an outcry from the hard core religious people.

If you want more info - check out this website -Devil Hunters

Also there is a cool movie called the Last Broadcast - it came before The Blair Witch Project and is much better - but it's about a couple of people in search of the New Jersey Devil.
Last Broadcast DVD

Oh here's a website for the Pine Barrens - for those that think that NJ is just paved from end to end and has no trees. NJ Pine Barrens
The original discussion - before VBulletin was How did you get your username?

Now new users can tell us about their names.

This thread is the one I was referring to. It's still open for replies, even though it's almost two years old. But there's nothing wrong with bringing up archive threads for a little dose of Entmoot history.

Mine, I cannot remember for the life of me why I chose such a name..

When I initially joined the forums I only wanted to ask a question, or simply reply to one thread ( cant remember exactly ) so I just picked a random user name so I could register. I'd change it if I could to something more Tolkien-nised... hence why I'm thinking of starting a new account. Any ideas for a new name for me?

I personally don't think you should. I like the name Twista and why do what everyone else does. Yeah - I could have a tolkien name - and then I would just be like 99% of the people on this board. Be unique and keep Twista I say.

As for myself, when I was little, I went to Russia to see some really old family friends. I met this girl about my age named Katya. A year or so later I got this cat, and I was thinking I should name it Katya because I liked the name and it sort of sounds like cat. I ended up using the name for a username a couple times, and I also use different cat-like names like Kathryn or one time Katsumi. So basically Katya was my cat's name (it's dead now. >.< ).

Actually most people don't have Tolkien names, or at least character names. Of the 8 people in this thread, 2 have character names, 1 has a wannabe-elvish name, and 5 have non-Tolkien-related names, for example.

But I think Twista is a great name. You should totally keep your account. I didn't even know there was a rapper called Twista - if I ever hear his music I'll think he named himself after the Mooter. (Besides it could be worse, at least you didn't put 'Lil Bow Wow. )

I choose Meriadoc Brandybuck because Merry is my favorite character, as you all probably know. Surprisingly, that name wasn't already taken!

Driving home from Newark (DE, not NJ ) yesterday I saw a license plate thingy (that goes around it like a border? a holder? not sure the name) that made me think of you...it said "New Jersey" on top in small letters and "Devils" (or Jersey Devils ?) on the bottom. That's the one time in my life so far when I wish I had a picture phone. I could get really close to look at it at a few stoplights.

My username is a character from Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet"...the comic/intelligent/plays-on-words/etc. guy who gets killed part way through. It's the first semi-interesting thing I thought of signing up (Nov 2003...I didn't really post until a few months later).

My name is certainly Tolkien inspired, but I had to pick something that reflected me as well. I know Queen Beruthiel was not a nice person, but I suspect her cats were quite nice. And I'm a lover of all things feline, hence "Beruthiel's cat."
