Time Warp Castings for LOTR

OK - if you could cast an LOTR movie with actors from any time period, whom would you choose for which roles?

I just thought of this the other day when I saw an actor I would have cast:

Aragorn: Gregory Peck

This is a great idea for a thread, Val.

What do you think of Charlton Heston as Gandalf???

Or Jimmy Stewart as Frodo??? (he's kinda tall, though...)

Or Orson Welles as Saruman????

Thank you! I DEFINITELY like the Charlton Heston idea... and the others have their merits too! I really like Stewart... wonder how he'd look as a hobbit. Even if we digitally 'shrunk' him - he'd look AWFUL skinny if scaled down to 3'-6" tall. I like the idea though.

Yes...Heston as Gandalf raises his staff at the bridge at Khazad-dum, points it at the Balrog -- and the Balrog splits in two!!!

What do you guys think of these?:

Denethor: Sean Connery
Faramir: Gary Cooper
Wormtongue: Peter Lorre
Arwen: Terri Hatcher (EDIT: or is she too 'bubbly'? Maybe Yvonne DeCarlo?)
Eowyn: Bridgette Nielsson

I want to use Vincent Price - but I'm unsure whether he should be 'Mouth of Sauron' or have a more prominent role like Saruman (or what do some others think of Orson Welles for Saruman, as BC suggests?). I'm thinking Jimmy Durante, Humphrey Bogart and Sylvester Stallone for some of the more prominent orcs - and maybe Ernest Borgnine for the King of the Easterlings who gets run down by Theoden on the Pelennor Fields (Ooo... or should he be Gimli?).

The hobbits are tough. Mickey Rooney as Sam? Or maybe Pippin? Ron Howard as Frodo?

Sorry. Not Charleton Heston. He'd just whip out an Ouzi against the Balrog and put an NRA chapter in Mordor.

However...
W.C. Fields as Barliman Butterbur
Cary Grant as Aragorn
James Coburn as Elrond
Elizabeth Taylor as Arwen (she just has to look hot and mysterious)
Jean Simmons as Eowyn
Walter Matthau as Gandalf
young Michael Caine as Faramir
young Sean Connery as Boromir

I don't know, personally I'd make him a Gandalf. Sean Connery always seems one second away of a reassuring smile. "Quick to anger, quick to laugh."

Oh, I like that casting! I've just been seeing two old pirate movies with him in them, he'd make a perfect Boromir.

I think Vincent Price would make an excellent wormtongue.

I think Peter Cushing would be better as Saruman. (I think he would make an excellent Denethor though.)

Ingrid Bergman is a good choice for Galadriel.

I would like
Peter O'Toole as Frodo
and
Omar Sharif (sp?) as Sam

I thought Ingrid Bergman would make a great Galadriel, too!!

I can't see Omar Sharif as Sam, though. You'd need a really great "second banana" type, so I would suggest Art Carney as Sam.

Have you seen "Lawrence of Arabia"?

This is the main reason I chose to pair O'Toole with Sharif, since they worked well together in this film.

Oh, yessss!! Peter Lorre is a perfect Wormtounge!!!

And I could certainly see Ernest Bornine as Gimli.

How about Tim Conway and Harvey Korman as Pippin and Merry???

Vincent Price would be a very good Sauruman, too!

I'll have to look some of those up! Don't know all my vintage hollywood actors that well.

I still like Gregory Peck over Cary Grant for Aragorn. Grant may look the part - but I always see him more as a 'straight man' in a comedy... OR, if in a serious movie (North by Northwest) - at least as having lots of funny lines to deliver with a straight face. Aragorn doesn't really have funny lines. And Earniel... check out Gregory Peck in his younger days... that's why I think he'd be good for Aragorn. I think he could pull off both the 'ranger' part and the 'kingly' part.

Well, if they ever show old movies with him again on TV, I'll do just that.

Oooo... who could John Wayne be? And last night, I thought it would be nice to use Yul Brynner... but again, I wasn't sure for whom.
