Gilthalion here (too lazy to change personas).

I now hear that it was 6.8 on the Richter Scale.

Ongoing State of Emergency.

This was real!

Re: Gee...

On the news they said that some people were trapped in the Space Needle for half an hour! It was swaying side to side and up and down. Ugh!

Re: Gee...

Small here, but enough to knock out power to some parts of Vancouver.

Scared me to pieces.

Well, I live on the other half of the continent in a low-earthquake-chance area, so I'm alright.

Anyone starting to believe the psychic and scientific predictions that there will be more natural disasters in the future?

I remember scientists said that they detected the potential for a huge, gargantuan earthquake in America (though I think on the Atlantic side) that could very well kill millions of people, but they have no idea at all on how soon/not soon it will strike.

Nostrodamus (don't tell me you don't know who he is) predicted that a huge earthquake would strike a city called "York", though nobody's sure which "York" he meant.

Re: ...

6.8 is pretty massive! I can`t believe that noone died except for the person that had a heart attack. How fortunate! Someone was watching over those people! Wow! If I had been one of those people stuck up in the Space Needle, i probably would`ve had a heart attack! It looks like the oldest parts of the city took the worst damage. I have a couple of friends in Vancouver. I`ll have to see if they felt it where they were.

Re: ...

An earthquake striknig york over here seems a little improbable. We only ever get really tiny quakes, like u wouldn't notice except maybe like a lorry driving past.

Re: ...

The 6.8 quake was 30 miles deep. That's why it only did TWO BILLION dollars damage.

Even down on the Gulf Coast, we get an occasional shake, the last one was just over 4, but far from us. It woke Miss Kitty, who dove under the covers down to my feet. Just the shelf settling under the load of silt brought down over a century or two by the rivers.

As for the potential for increasingly frequent and severe quakes, I haven't researched, but I've wondered if we haven't seen a pick up in the last generation or so.

I give no credence to Nostradamus. New York is hardly in a quake prone zone. But "earthquakes in diverse places" are definitely a matter of Christian prophecy.

Re: Toronto's original name was York.

My family all felt it distinctly in Portland. Nothing here in Utah.

I just talked to my dad on instant messenger. He works on the third floor of his building and the whole thing was swaying back and forth. And they finished earthquake-proofing the whole thing just in time!

*warning! blast from the past*

Rock on! This EQ was a fair one and fortunatly not much damage in the Seatle area. Believe it or not, they are still debating the structural integrety of the Alaskan Way Viaduct through Seattle as it carries hundreds of thousands of cars each day....
