Sherlock Holmes, who is the best Holmes actor?

I'd say Basil Rathbone

I've not seen all the sherlock films, but I love sherlock! he's the greatest detective. No fictional detective seems to be albe to surpass him

Uh... but I think it's Basil Rathbone... isn't it?

Many years ago I read a bunch of the stories (including the first two - 'A Study in Scarlet' and 'The Sign of the Four' and 'Hound of the Baskervilles' - as well as several short stories) - and I've seen a number of the old films with Basil Rathbone - more recent films just don't seem to measure up.

hmm...I've read a few Holmes stories. The red headed league, the speckled band, and I started The Seven per cent solution (which was NOT written by Doyle, btw).

Oh - we're drifting into 'Literature' forum material here - but if you like Holmes stories, you should DEFINITELY go back and read those I mentioned. 'Study in Scarlet' and 'Sign of Four' were the first two Holmes stories written. They're longer than most of the following stories - which were largely short stories. 'Hound of the Baskervilles' is an exception - it's novel-length and a very good story. The latter was made into a movie, of course - I don't think either 'Study in Scarlet' or 'Sign of Four' was... but very good stories as well.

In seventh grade, I jumped directly from "Nancy Drew" mysteries into "Sherlock Holmes." I never looked back.

I remember seeing my first Sherlock Holmes movie on television when I was in high school. It starred Basil Rathbone and I was very disappointed. I had read most of the short stories and all four of the novels by that time and I expected it to be full of Victorian atmosphere. Instead, it was made during WWII and it showed Holmes fighting the Nazis. Not what I expected at all!!! (there was just something about Holmes and Watson on an airplane that set my teeth on edge...)

Although Rathbone's performances are good on the whole, the actor who really got it right was Jeremy Brett in the excellent BBC adaptations of the stories. Not only were the adaptations written superbly, but Brett's performance was incredible. He was well and truly Sherlock Holmes. No other actor has even come close to the realization and truth of A.C. Doyle's creation.

It's too bad that Mr. Brett passed away some years ago, before finishing the complete Sherlock Holmes series.

So, as far as I'm concerned, the very best Sherlock Holmes of all time is: (the envelope, please...)

I have read ALL Sherlock Holmes mysteries, including the new (and not so good) ones by contemporary mystery writers.

But I haven't seen any movies---which should I start with?

"Hound of the Baskervilles" with Jeremy Brett is very good.

I have a friend who used to watch the Jeremy Brett tapes every night as he went to sleep. Apparently, his wife sleeps like a rock, so it didn't bother her. I think it's safe to assume who his favorite Holmes is...

i would try to get a hold of the Jeremy Brett BBC versions mentioned above... i've never read a single book (i'm not much of a mystery fan), but watched that series quite a bit while it was running and enjoyed it very much

You are thinking of Nigel Bruce who was great as Watson.

In the 1980s the cable tv station HBO had a very good stage play adaptation with Frank Langella as Sherlock Holmes based on the 1889 play by William Gillette. It apparently was taped on a stage with an audience, since the actors even projected as stage actors and not as a movie. If it's available somewhere it's worth watching- it has a real Victorian/Edwardian flavor. I like the Basil Rathbone movies too, especially the train one, but the Gillette play really captures the atmosphere of the original more.

George Zucco played Moriarity in 1939 and several other Holmes films.
