A Nit-pickers guide to deviations between the books and the films

I saw this at another site and found it interesting.

Excellent site.

Phil does a very good job of documenting the difference of the film compared to the books.

I enjoyed look through his highlighted points. Many I never thought much about, such as the Black Gate or Minas Morgul.

My friend and I were reading those today and some of the points were like, who cares. The fact that someone would take the time to point out all of the differences shows that person has no life.

I thought is was a great site!

About the Nazgul swooping over Minas Tirith, picking soldiers off the battlements, I think the author also should have included that Legolas shot one of the winged mounts in FotR.
I always made a connection between that and the Nazgul keeping out of bowshot of the city. Legolas showed them that they weren't invulnerable (then Eowyn really drove the point home. )

An interesting site, especially since he makes it clear it's done mainly for fun and acknowledges some are very minor. One I haven't mentioned, but I think was one more error by PJ not to put in the film was:
____________________
NITPICKERS GUIDE: #43:
"The number of the Fellowship was to be nine as a counter to the nine Black Riders. This number is set before anyone volunteers to join the Fellowship (FOTR p.360). Jackson portrays the number of companions in the Fellowship being the result of another logic (i.e. Sam, Merry, and Pippin all showing up). In addition, the members of the Fellowship are chosen after the Council whereas Jackson has the membership of the Fellowship set and the conclusion of the Council. The idea that there are nine companions in the Fellowship to counter the nine Black Riders is never touched on in Jackson's film."
______________________

Why in the movie couldn't Elrond have concluded the selection of the Nine Walkers with a statement something like: "And the free peoples of Middle-earth shall set the Nine Walkers against the Nine Riders."?

("Oh, and Arwen, you stay home and (knit, sew, whatever) a nice banner.")

One other thing, rereading part of the appendix, it's remarkable how much PJ and friends destroyed Elrond's character. In retrospect it's hard to say which was messed with more, Elrond's or Denethor's.

There's only 1 change that bothers me, it's roughly between the start of FotR and the end of RotK. You may miss it, it's very quick - merely 9 and a half hours long or so.
