I find it strange that RotK wasn't nominated for Best Cinematography and the Sound Editing categories. It stinks that none of the actors were nominated as well, especially since RotK was their best performances

I agree about the actors and actresses. Perhaps the sheer number of good performances kept them from being nominated. How do the voters pick one over another? And even if every voter picked one of them, the votes may have been split up enough that nobody got enough votes to make top five.

With this movie (the story itself) it seems hard to distinguish between 'lead' and 'supporting' roles. Or does the Academy have hard & fast rules that would make it easy?

Yeh that is rubbish none of the actors are getting recognised. But they'll surely get recognised collectivly when they pick up best picture

I didn't think he'd win, but I thought Sean Astin had a chance for nom. to BSA. Valandil may have a point about several good performances diluting the votes, I imagine VM and IM were only considered in Best Actor category?

Also, a "mystery of life" question about categories:
______________
Best Sound
''The Last Samurai''
''The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King''
''Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World''
''Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl''
''Seabiscuit''

Best Sound Editing
''Finding Nemo''
''Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World''
''Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl''
______________
How can a picture "Finding Nemo" in this case, be nominated for BSE but not BS. If they did such a great job editing the sound, how come the finished product isn't even in the top five.
Oh, yeah, and do the above nominations mean that "The Last Samurai" and "LOTR" didn't have any editing? They just were done on a sort of first take?

My view would be that the actors didn't get enough continuous time on-screen to show what they can do. The problem is with the editing and direction, not the performances.

Sorry to be a dreary old misery guts, but I don't think it deserves any except maybe the design and technical ones.

I can see an argument for rewarding the achievement of having made the films at all. Not sure where that should come, though.

The way I see it, the only 2 that are deserving is RotK and Mystic River...

yep.
anf rotk was the best for performances of the three.
especially for billy boyd(second half of the movie anyway)
and Sean Astin, though not as good a performance as in TTT, IMO.
well, I hope rotk wins. just because. .

Mystic River looks great. I need to see it.
I'm glad that they didnt forget about Seabiscuit .

Yes - maybe a special one-time award for taking this project on... (ED: a very special 'Oscar'!)

I'll give him an Oscar (ups with her umbrella)!

Shouldn't this be merged with the 2004 Oscars thread?

Why? It's not a predictor thread, it is just showing the nominees...

I agree that the problem was simply too many in the cast to give any one of them enough screen time to justify an award. Although I did think Sean could have gotten a supporting nom. I bet you're right, that the nominations were split, and I hope that the cast feels that by winning best picture (assuming), it is giving a nod to their ensemble acting performance.

I'm thrilled about Depp! I'd be surprised if he won, but it's about time the Academy recognized some comedy performances (and Bill Murray, too, although I haven't seen LiT).

The Last Samurai is the best movie I've seen all year. I think all these awards are totally rigged - let's remember that Titanic got an oscar. x50
