Dracula Survey

Having recently finished the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, I decided to conduct a Dracula survey. I wasn't really sure where to put this. It deals with movies, but also with a book which could be considered either fantasy literature, or general literature (I bleieve iti is generally included in mainstream literature, rather than fantasy, yes?) But anyway, it's really a survey, about us more than about the stuff, so I put it in General Messages.

Anywho. I am conducting a survey on Dracula knowledge, and I would like as many responses as possible. If you have read this far, I would appreciater responses.

1) Have you read Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula?
2) How many (if any) of the film adaptations have you seen?
3) If you can remember, which ones were they?
4) Have you read any works of Bram's which were related to Dracula?

My favourite Dracula movie is "Nosferatu." I'm sure I don't need to into the controversy of the movie...

I also like Legosi's version of Dracula. I fell asleep in Bram Stoker's Dracula, so I really can't say either way if I like it or not.

1. It's next on my reading list. I started it last year, but now I need to begin again. Hmm.

2. I don't think I've seen any, amazingly enough. I have, however, seen a stage adaptation, which was really good. It's called The Passion of Dracula, and it makes it all quite funny.

4. Nope. I've read a bit, and am planning on reading much more, on the historical Vlad Tepes (or Vlad Dracula, or Vlad the Impaler...etc), on whom Dracula is based, and also on the writing of the novel. It's an incredibly interesting subject. Especially Vlad. The bastard.

May I add my own question? How many people know about Vlad, and how much? I'm interested in what people know about him.

Good question, I'll add it in. I've heard that he wasn't actually based on Vlad, but that Bram mainly just used the name...

Well, as I've said, I still have to read it. Stoker has him in Transylvania where Vlad was from Wallachia, but there were some stories/rumors, etc, especially from the Russian records of the time, that Vlad himself was a vampire. I'll have to look that up soon as I get my book, In Search of Dracula.

About a dozen (and about 9 of those were prolly from the Hammer Studio)

I ususaly have trouble what day it is..........I have no chance of remembering what all those movies were called.

4) Have you read any works of Bram's which were related to Dracula?

I didn't even know they were in print.

5) Do you prefer to book to the films?

It depends, some of the movies were quite cheesy and funny......the book was a little shallow.

6) Which film adaptation was your favourite?

Birde of the sister of Dracula's shemale son

The one with Gary Oldman........but they still messed up the characterisation of Dracula

Ruler of Wallencia, quote fond of filling his captured enemies bellies with stake (usually buy throwing them onto a stake from a big height)............he's not on my "have a pint with" list.

1) I haven't read it.
2) and 3) I've only seen Bram Stoker's Dracula from 1992.
4) I haven't.

6) As I said I've only seen one film, but I liked it much.

8) I've read that he lived in the Middle Ages and was the ruler of Transylvania in Romania. He ruled with an iron hand and executed a lot of the Romanian peasants, mainly by puncturing them with stakes.

Yes.
2) How many (if any) of the film adaptations have you seen?
Several, I think maybe five or six.
3) If you can remember, which ones were they?
Bram Stoker's Dracula, Dracula 2000, Lugosi's Dracula, Nosferatu, and the one with Jack Pallance, that I can remember.
4) Have you read any works of Bram's which were related to Dracula?
I don't know if they're in print either, Coney, I was just hoping someone here might know more than me.
5) Do you prefer to book to the films?
Definitely. I don't think I've read a book where I liked the movie more. Except of course for Star Wars, which is more a movie than book phenomenon.
6) Which film adaptation was your favourite?
Hmm...Nosferatu, Jack Pallance, Bram Stoker's, I all liked. BSD's probably my favourite.
7) Which film adaptation would you deem to be closest to the book, if you have read the book?
Definitely Bram Stoker's Dracula; it certainly had it's translation problems, but of course Dracula is written in a form which would be quite hard to translate to film, and it's probably the best I'm gonna get.
8) Do you know of Vlad Tepes, the historical figure from whom the name (and possibly the character) of Dracula is taken? If so, how much?
I know that he lived in Eastern Europe, modern-day Romania, I believe. He is known for the many monstrosities he committed, and is said to have been especially fond of putting people on sharp pointy sticks, hence the name "Vlad the Impaler". He was also known for boiling people, I believe, and dining in the presence of his impaled victims.

I look forward to hearing from more mooters.

1.Yes.
2.I think 3, IIRC.
3.BSD, Lugosi's, and Nasferatu.
4.I have been for years looking for a book by him called Dracula's Guest, which I think is kind of like a UT-type story of part of Dracula, but I'm not sure. It is probably out of print, because I haven't ever seen it, but have heard of it.
5. I like the book better than any of the movies
6. BSD is my favorite and is the best adaptation I've seen.
I have no info about Vlad, sorry.

Had a lil' read-up about Vlad...........seems one of his most famous acts of cruelty was to nail a hat to the head of one of the members of his court.........because to poor guy forgot to remove his hat in Vlad's prescence :/

No, I wouldn't want to meet him either...heh...scary man! scary man!

Wallachia! WALLACHIA!!! *ahem* sorry...heh...different place, is all. Different parts of the Carpathians and Romania.
Oh, and it wasn't just the peasants...he did the same to many of the Boyars (nobility types). And he imprisoned many of the Boyar and made them build his castle, Poanare (I think I spelled that wrong. Forgive me.) But anyway. Most of them died building it, and I think he impaled the rest. I'm going to stop talking about Vlad now...heh...or else I'll end up going on waaay too long...

Oh, and Bela Lugosi? I haven't actually seen his Dracula yet, at least not all of it, but he never learned English, just said the lines phonetically, and his accent isn't Romanian! Bah!

Yep. That was a Hungarian accent, that was.
I find this especially amusing because once my friends went to the library on or around Halloween and this guy was there talking about Dracula, and Vlad, sort of pretending to BE Dracula, and my friend could tell he'd just copied Bela Lugosi's accent. She's crazier than I am Then they asked him all these questions about Vlad and Radu that he couldn't answer. Heh.

Sheeana--I don't think he learned much, if any English for the part, anyway. Hmm. Oh well, it's still funny.

Azalea, when I saw that, I went to go check it out on amazon.com, and I found quite a few other's, besides Dracula's Guest. There's Lady of the Shroud, The Jewel of Seven Stars, and more.
